Summary: A FIRE WEATHER WATCH HAS BEEN ISSUED TODAY FOR DRY LIGHTNING POTENTIAL A weather system today will lead to some cloud buildups and possibly a thunderstorm. The greatest chance for a thunderstorm is east of the fire. If a thunderstorm does occur, gusty outflow winds as high as 40 mph are anticipated to make rapidly changing conditions for firefighters. Changing conditions are anticipated to include active burning on the interior portions of the fire an increase in the potential of spot fires outside of the fire perimeter. If dry lightning occurs with this system, there is an increased chance that the team will need to respond to initial attack fires. Today’s weather will be a heads up situation for firefighters on all area fires. Miles Fire (31,951 acres, 15% contained): Firefighters made great progress on the fire yesterday. Weather: Today will be mostly sunny becoming partly cloudy with a slight chance of showers or thunderstorms in the late afternoon. Winds will be NW at 3-6 mph with gusts up to 10 mph; 15 mph on ridges. Terrain driven upslope/downslope winds will occur with exposed areas having NW wind in the afternoon hours, shifting to NE overnight. Warm, dry weather and smoky skies will continue. Minimum relative humidity will be 30%. Max temperatures: 80-90s in the valleys to mid-80s on the ridges. Yesterday’s Activities: Low intensity hand firing, assisted by aircraft, continued west of the new primary fireline along the south end of the fire. This work is being done to prevent potential spot fires that could cross the fireline to the east. The fireline was connected to the fire burn scar from the 2017 Eclipse Complex on the south, and will tie into the completed containment line at the South Fork Indian Creek on the north. The pilot was able to self-extricate and did not suffer serious injury. Incident Commander Brian Goff, said, “We are thankful the pilot was able to walk away from this incident. Firefighting aircraft work closely with ground firefighters to contain fires. They are all part of the team. I admire the skill and bravery they exhibit on every fire.” The Horns Mountain Fire in the Colville National Forest is 838 acres and is 5 percent contained. Due to fire activity overnight, the fire is now estimated at approximately 52 acres. The fire is being managed under a full suppression strategy and with the favorable conditions that presented today, crews were able to safely engage in direct attack on the south portion of the fire. This slowed its rate of spread and increased containment to 10%. Today we were fortunate to have a Canadian Helicopter with Rappellers who were able to rappel onto the fire and engage in direct line construction on the south flank of the fire. The team is still actively engaged in developing contingency plans to ensure that the fire impact is minimized in areas threatened.Approximately 40 structures in the area of the fire remain under a Level 1 evacuation (Get Ready). Sustained, hard work constructing and securing line around the fires helps protect threatened values at risk and provide for firefighter and public safety. Efforts are being focused on confining and containing the south and east sides of the Klondike Fire to reduce the potential threat to the communities of Selma and Cave Junction. Hamma Hamma, WA – On Tuesday, crews completed brushing along Forest Road 25 to serve as the north containment line. Fire crews continued to secure Forest Road 2480 by extinguishing or removing burning material along the eastern edge of the fire. Hoselays and sprinkler systems are operating along the south and east side of the fire. On Wednesday, fire crews will continue chipping debris along Forest Roads 25 and 2401. They will also be extinguishing burning material and cutting hazard trees to improve firefighter safety along Forest Road 2480. Due to the steep, inaccessible terrain, firefighters will not engage on the west flank of the fire on Jefferson Ridge but will be monitoring fire growth on the west and north side. The long term strategy is to keep the fire between Forest Road 25 and Forest Road 2401 while monitoring fire behavior and progression to the west. NORTHPORT WA – 8:30 pm. The Washington Department of Natural Resources released the following statement regarding today’s aircraft incident: “We are aware of an incident involving a fixed-wing aircraft at the Horns Mountain Fire near Northport, WA. We are working with our partners to gather more information at this time but want the public to know that the pilot of the aircraft is ok and receiving medical attention for any possible injuries.” Air Spray USA, Inc, the company that owns the aircraft, stated: “The aircraft experienced an unknown problem on the fire it was working near the US/Canadian border. The pilot executed a forced landing on a logging road and was able to exit the aircraft. He was transported to the hospital. No other information is available at this time. Kettle Falls, WA – The Boyd’s fire is located 3 miles west northwest of Kettle Falls, Washington. The fire has burned 2,922 with no containment at this time. Participating agencies in fighting the fire include Washington Department of Natural Resources, USFS Colville National Forest, Bureau of Land Management, Joint Fire Districts Stevens County 8/Ferry County 3 and the Colville Bureau of Indian Affairs. Approximately 430 structures remain threatened. Three residences were lost in the fire in addition to several outbuildings. Overnight, crews worked along the southern perimeter of the fire securing fire line, establishing drop points and gridding the fire area. Dozer line was completed tying into the Bisbee Mtn. Rd. to the communication towers. The Baker River Hotshots conducted burnout operations around the towers consuming fuel and reducing potential fire spread to the towers.
