Favorable weather conditions Sunday night allowed direct attack on the Cougar Creek Fire. Summary: The area remains in ‘moderate drought’ conditions with 65 days since the last meaningful rainfall. Fuels remain receptive to ignition with the probability of ignition over 80%. There will be a later lift of the smoke inversion today which will moderate fire behavior until humidity levels bottom out in the afternoon. After 3:00 p.m., increased fire activity is anticipated as maximum heating and drying occurs through 8:00 p.m. Southwest Oregon remains open for business and ready to welcome visitors. Please check with local chambers of commerce and businesses as there are many opportunities for recreationalists, including access to Lost Creek Lake through Joseph Stewart State Park. Final Update YESTERDAY: The fire was kept within the containment lines while being tested by significant winds. While the fire was held in check, the wind contributed to snags falling throughout the fire area. Firefighters worked on intense mop up around the fire perimeter. Repair work continued on dozer lines and fences damaged during fire suppression. Friday night’s dry thunderstorms with lightning, contributed to numerous new fires across Washington. The Department of Natural Resources reported 68 new wildfires. With the increased initial attack activity, fire managers identified resources that could be released and reassigned to assist where needed. TODAY: Firefighters will be finishing mop up on the fire. Engines will be directed to persistent areas of heat by Palm Infrared Teams. Acreage: 51,120 Containment: 15%Increased fire activity today. The change in wind direction from the northeast will create alignment with fire and fuels increasing fire growth. Fire from the Klondike has extended south, across the Illinois River. Crews are placing focus on protection of communities southeast of Klondike Fire, and residences and recreation sites south of the Illinois River. A primary objective is to reduce the spread of Klondike Fire southward. Scouting continues for additional contingency lines. Mop up and repair continues along the controlled perimeters.
