Providing medical standby to firefighters on the line (Sheep Creek Fire Wildfire)
Firefighting can be a dangerous business – fire is not the only hazard that the women and men face. In the woods there are snakes, bees and other wildlife that could cause injury. Snags, or unstable trees, can fall without warning. Steep terrain can easily lead to falls. Emergency Medical professionals know that there is a “golden hour” after an injury to get the patient to definitive care – a hospital. That is why incident management teams staff Emergency Medical Technicians to stand by at strategic locations around the fire perimeter – to reach the injured firefighter faster and get him/her off the line as quickly as possible. At the Sheep Creek Fire, there are three ambulances on the fire line, in different locations, staffed with EMT’s and Paramedics. In addition, there are two Paramedics in a 4-wheel drive truck available to respond to more remote locations on the fire to stabilize a patient if needed. The Washington National Guard comes equipped with two medics...
