Fire Staff and Crews Prepare for 2018 Fall Prescribed Fire Operations (2018 Malheur NF Prescribed Fire Prescribed Fire)

Inciweb Articles OR - September 12, 2018 - 5:52pm
Malheur National Forest fire officials are monitoring conditions on the Forest and preparing to implement the fall prescribed fire program. Prescribed fires, also known as controlled burns, refer to the planned and controlled use of fire by a team of highly skilled fire managers under specific conditions. During the fall months, the Forest has a number of planning units, ranging in size from 150 acres up to 4000 acres, scheduled for prescribed fire operations. Prescribed fires are conducted within specific parameters including temperature, relative humidity, fuel moisture, and wind speed. Implementation is dependent upon these and other necessary conditions. Should conditions allow, crews may start operations on some smaller units as early as Friday, September 14, 2018. Fall burning will build upon efforts in the spring and early summer of 2018 when the Forest safely and successfully accomplished prescribed fire operations on approximately 4,500 acres. Spring operations reduced...

InciWeb Articles WA - September 12, 2018 - 12:30pm
Miriam Fire Update Fire Information Line: 509-655-1468 August 12, 2018 – 12:30 p.m. Acres: Miriam Fire – 5,330 acres Percent Containment: 50% Start Date: 07/30/18 Current Situation: Crews took advantage of cooler and wetter weather to dig new handline to keep the fire’s recent fire growth south of Round Mountain ridge and north of the Forest Service 530 Spur Road. Driven by winds this weekend, the Miriam Fire pushed past the control line in the vicinity of Hell Creek and Round Mountain areas, resulting in a reduction in percentage of containment. In response, the number of personnel has grown as firefighters continue to work to increase the containment. This includes the today’s addition of the 20-person Entiat Interagency Hotshot Crew. Firefighters will continue to take advantage of the damp weather to concentrate on fortifying the indirect line to hold the new fire growth in check. While many areas of the fire have experienced scattered...

September 12, 2018 Update for Klondike Fire (Klondike Fire Wildfire)

Inciweb Articles OR - September 12, 2018 - 10:26am
Overview Klondike Fire West Zone Increased moisture in the air is reducing fire activity, as well as ability for tactical firing. This trend is expected to continue for most of this week. Firefighters are continuing to improve control lines and mop up hot spots close to the fire perimeter. Helicopters will be assisting with these efforts. As incidents evolve, mapping usually becomes more precise. Today’s map shows unburned area between Saddle Mountain and Collier Butte that was shown on prior maps as within the fire perimeter. This change resulted in a slight adjustment to fire acreage. Klondike Fire East Zone and Taylor Creek Fire Fire-weakened trees continue to send debris cascading down onto roads, and crews are working to mitigate these hazard to provide safe entry when the roads are again open to the public. Recovery of timber removed during the suppression effort is also ongoing. Suppression repair continues on containment lines on the Taylor Creek fire. This includes...

InciWeb Articles WA - September 12, 2018 - 10:01am
Total acres for the Iron East Fire is approximately 150 acres.Ensuring public safety and the safety of firefighters is the utmost priority as firefighters work to contain the fire. The fire is burning primarily in dry, dead and downed woody debris. These fuels retain the fire’s heat longer than twigs and grasses. Bees also continue to be an issue for firefighters in the forest. The western portion of the fire is 16 acres and has line around the perimeter. Mop up of this fire is expected to finish by Friday. The wind rapidly expanded the eastern fire earlier in the week indicated by its long narrow footprint. On Tuesday night, crews removed fuels by ignition in the northeast corner of the fire to bolster protection of structures to the north and reduce the likeliness of spread. Crews will take the controlled burning down the hill on Thursday and Friday to strengthen the firelines. The eastern portion of the fire is approximately 130 acres. A cool and showery weather pattern is expected...

09-12-18 Update (McLeod Fire Wildfire)

InciWeb Articles WA - September 12, 2018 - 8:52am
September 12, 2018 Update Fire activity has moderated due to cool temperatures, relatively low winds and higher relative humidity. Crescent and McLeod Fires received reports of precipitation yesterday which contributed to increased containment. Rain received Tuesday did not fully saturate fuels, although any precipitation helps reduce fire spread potential. Smoke and fire activity will still be visible. Until this area receives a soaking rain or the first blanket of snow, stumps, downed logs, and other ground fuels will continue to smolder and smoke. With reduced fire activity and increased containment, firefighters will no longer work night shifts.Crescent Mountain Fire: Crews will continue to patrol, mop up and remove equipment and supplies from secured fire lines near residences where it is safe to do so. The fire remains active along the lines in the areas near Buttermilk Creek and along the ridgelines near Lake Chelan. Firefighters strive to limit the fire size and minimize...
