Fire The Klondike Fire continued to have minimal growth yesterday. Crews continue to build containment lines along the northern portions of the fire. The fire continues to smolder within the existing footprint continuing to produce smoke. Currently the Klondike Fire is 130,258 acres and 51% contained, with 814 acres of growth on Sunday. Similar fire behavior is expected today. Smoke-Today Smoke patterns should be similar to yesterday. Coastal communities should be mostly be clear. Communities to the south and east of the fire will likely see afternoon smoke impacts. Agness should see clear air most of the day with a few hours of higher impacts in the early afternoon. Bear Camp Road System Remains Closed to General Public:Rafting Traffic, Residents of Agness and Galice Allowed Through Southwest OR – Effective at noon on September 10, 2018, those with valid permits and/or authorization may travel on Bear Camp Road. Bear Camp Road remains closed to general public travel due to Klondike Fire activity.Bear Camp Road (Forest Road 23) is the most common route traveled for the shuttle drivers for Wild and Scenic Lower Rogue River visitors, providing a shorter alternative to the Highway 199-to-Highway 101 route. The current closure includes the Peavine Road system. At approximately 10pm on Friday, lightning started two fires in the Blewett Pass vicinity. Approximately 32 acres are burning to the east of Forest Road 9714 and 8 acres are burning to the west of Forest Road 9714. Level 2 evacuations are underway for homes 1/2 miles north of the fire. Engines are positioned in the neighborhoods of the level 2 evacuations to maintain a presence on the ridge. There is a structure protection plan in place for these structures.Sunday was basically a preparation day. Air support dropped retardant from a heavy tanker, a Very Large Air Tanker (VLAT), and helicopters. Water was also used to slow the fire’s perimeter progress. Dozers continue to improve the overgrown roadways on the eastern fire. The eastern fire has dozer line completed on the north and the southwestern lower corner. Happy Camp, CA – Warm and dry conditions are expected again today with increasing clouds, slightly cooler temperatures and breezy ridge top level winds out of the west northwest. After today, the temperatures are forecast to become cooler with clouds moving in, bringing higher levels of humidity and moderating fire behavior. Yesterday’s Activities: Aerial resources monitored the fire on the west flank noting moderate fire activity with containment lines holding. Firefighters patrolled the containment lines on the east side for smoldering fire in heavy fuels and duff and continued the work of repairing roads, trails and firelines. The uncontained fire’s edge continued to slowly move south toward the 2017 Eclipse Fire footprint. Today’s Activities: Aerial resources will monitor fire activity and the containment lines on the west side to ensure the fire remains east of El Capitan ridge. Overview Klondike Fire West Zone On Sunday, September 9, higher humidity allowed firefighters to continue securing the line from Horse Sign Butte west to Game Lake Peak and south to Saddle Mountain. During the afternoon, conditions were right for a successful tactical firing operation from Forest Service Road 2308 Northeast to Brandy Creek. Tactical firing is an effective way to remove fuels and reduce the intensity of a wildfire. Fire in Silver and Indigo Creek continued to creep and smolder with isolated tree torching. Helicopters dropped 110,890 gallons of water on hot spots to assist firefighters. Cougar Creek, Lost, and Bannock Lakes Fires Some firefighters head for home but suppression repair work continues Monday, September 10, 2018 Cougar Creek Fire: Minimal fire activity continues across all divisions of the fire. Some helicopter bucket work was used to cool a small area on the northeast side of the fire Sunday. Fire suppression repair activities continue, including repair of fire lines, dozer lines and roads. Trees and vegetation that were removed in the construction of fire lines are being chipped and piled. This suppression repair work will continue until the work is complete. The fire is not yet contained as some fire suppression work remains on the north and northeast portions of the fire. However, a smaller force will be able to address this portion of the fire while fire suppression repair continues. 9/9 Natchez Fire Update Happy Camp, CA – Warm and dry weather is expected today with breezy west to northwest winds on the ridges in the afternoon. Winds are expected to be 10 to15 mph by midday with gusts up to 20 mph near the mountain peaks. On the lower slopes winds should remain light. A cooling trend expected to start Monday, should moderate fire behavior. Yesterday’s Activities: Containment lines in Cyclone Gap continue to keep the fire from spreading to the west. Helicopter water drops were used to cool hot spots near the ridges between the mountain peaks and hand crews completed their work to suppress the spot fire on the west side of Polar Bear Mountain. Smoke lingered on the east flank and little fire activity was noted. Crews continued to patrol all containment lines and worked to repair fire suppression impacts. Firing operations will continue as weather permits. Crews will continue to mop-up and secure the fire line. The fire continues to be active in the Horse Sign, Silver, and Indigo Creek areas. If conditions are favorable, firefighters will continue tactical firing operations along Forest Service Roads 150, and 2308, near Sugar Loaf Peak. Tactical firing is an effective way to remove fuels and reduce the intensity of a wildfire. Klondike Fire East Zone and Taylor Creek Fire Work to repair contingency and alternate lines that were constructed during the suppression phase continues. Repair activities include replacing damaged culverts, grading heavily used roads, removing dozer berms and constructing water bars on steep slopes.
