Size: 10,850 acres Containment: 41% Personnel: 678 Current Status: The northeast section of the fire, which had backed down Sawtooth Ridge Friday, showed very little activity yesterday. Clear skies allowed for continued bucket drops throughout the day, substantially reducing the risk of spread of fire across FS 1993. Fire containment lines held with no observed spotting. Early afternoon winds caused increased fire activity along the eastern perimeter of the fire and died down in the evening, resulting in approximately 170 acres of growth. Fire The Klondike Fire had minimal growth yesterday mainly as a result of firing operations that continued to expand containment lines along the north edge of the fire. However interior smoldering from the large burned area will continue to produce significant smoke. Currently the Klondike Fire is 129,444 acres and 51% contained. Similar conditions are expected today. Smoke-Today Dense smoke is expected to linger in valleys within the Rogue River-Siskiyou NF and surrounding areas and will again be slow to lift, likely not until noon or later. This afternoon smoke is expected to be pushed into the Rogue River Valley and Illinois River Valley, but should lighten overnight. Cougar Creek, Lost, and Bannock Lakes Fires Scattered rain showers fall across the fires Sunday, September 9, 2018 Cougar Creek Fire: Minimal fire activity was reported on all divisions of the fire Saturday. Fire suppression activities continue, including repair of fire lines, dozer lines and road impacts. Trees and vegetation that was removed in the construction of fire lines is being chipped and piled. No lightning was observed over the fire Friday night, however Saturday morning the Cougar Creek Fire assisted with initial attack on two lightning-caused fires near Blewett Pass, the Iron East and Iron West Fires. One 20-person hand crew, 6 fire engines, and 1 dozer responded. The Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest is beginning a process to assess how severe the fires have impacted the forest and what actions could be implemented to lessen the post-fire impacts. The Gila Las Cruces Type 3 Incident Management Team, led by Incident Commander Ricky Cox, assumed management of the Miles Fire on September 8. The safety of firefighters and the public continues to be the highest priority. Crews are continuing to make good progress securing the fire’s perimeter. Firefighters have been actively patrolling the fire’s edge. Dry weather will continue on Sunday with gusty breezes in the afternoon and early evening hours. A weak front could bring isolated showers near or over the area Monday morning, but probably not enough to wet the ground. Winds could be slightly stronger Monday, especially in the late afternoon and early evening hours. Fire suppression repair will continue to focus on restoring dozer lines and handlines to a more natural state and to prevent sediment runoff from impacting fish-bearing streams. Terwilliger Fire September 8, 2018 Fact SheetCurrent Status: Fire behavior was generally less active in most areas yesterday as smoke once again covered the area for much of the day. Mop up and chipping operations are now underway on the west, northwest and northeast sections of the fire as patrols also monitor these areas. The fire is continuing to back down Sawtooth Ridge toward FS1993 and it was more active on the east side as westerly winds pushed it eastward, further into the Three Sisters Wilderness. To the south, mop up and chipping operations occurred, as well as some firing operations to widen line. The fire size is now reported with a 1,038 acre increase since yesterday. This represents a two-day increase because Infrared data for the past two days was unavailable. Planned Actions: Today crews will continue patrolling, mop up and chipping operations to the west and north along FS1986. 9/8 Natchez Fire Update Happy Camp, CA –The weather forecast calls for mostly sunny conditions and breezy at the ridges. Temperatures are expected to be in the 80’s at the mid slopes and in the 70’s at upper elevations. Expect winds on the ridges to be from the northwest 10-15 mph by late morning then gusting up to 20 mph through the saddles on the west flank. Yesterday’s Activities: By mid-afternoon the smoke cleared and air resources were able to fly, apply retardant and hold the fire in check at Cyclone Gap. Crews continued to work to contain the spot fire west of Polar Bear Mountain. On the east flank, crews patrolled for and extinguished hot spots. The fire continued to move southwest towards the Eclipse Fire footprint.
