Overview Klondike Fire West Zone A community meeting will be held tonight, Wednesday, September 5 beginning at 5:00 P.M. at the Agness Community Library. Fire activity increased Tuesday due to hotter and drier conditions. Extensive use of helicopter drops helped minimize fire growth. Heavy smoke in the Indigo Creek drainage again prevented air tanker operations over the fire. Torching pockets of manzanita in this area produced large smoke columns visible from Agness and Oak Flat. Crews continued fuel reduction operations on contingency lines and worked on structure protection in and around Agness. On Wednesday very hot and dry weather will continue. Upper level winds are forecast to shift from the northeast to west-southwest. A strategy similar to Tuesday is planned, including fuel reduction, contingency line treatment west of Horse Sign Creek and Fish Hook Creek and aggressive suppression of any increased fire activity on the fire perimeter. The team is focusing on mop-up and suppression repair, which includes erasing the footprint left behind by aggressive firefighting tactics and removing dangerous snags. Lakeview Estates remains in a Level 1 Be Ready evacuation status. The team is in constant communication with the Lake County Sheriff regarding when it is safe to lift the notification. Cougar Creek Fire: The fire saw no increase in size on Monday. Firefighters are constructing containment lines and working to address active fire areas in the north, particularly near Mad River and Signal Peak. Helicopters are dropping water to support on-the-ground efforts. Line has been completed along the western perimeter except for a small area near Sugarloaf Peak, raising the containment to 64 percent. Mop up operations, infrared imaging to find hot spots, and patrolling are continuing along completed line on the western perimeter. The southern and eastern areas of the fire are secure, and firefighters are conducting mop up, backhaul, and repair work. Klondike: 109,187 acres and 42% contained Taylor Creek: 52,839 acres and 95% contained The Miles Fire continues to produce smoke as interior pockets of unburned fuels ignite under dry and breezy conditions. The Hugo Fire may also produce occasional smoke today as mop up continues. Smoke Northeast winds today across the Klondike Fire today will continue to push smoke impacts across the Rogue River- Siskiyou NF and the Brookings area. Other places across the outlook area may see smoke impacts from nearby fires, but overall expect air quality to remain Good. As winds weaken look for smoke impacts to expand northward to include Gold Beach and Agness by Wednesday morning. 9/4 Natchez Fire Update Happy Camp, CA – The off shore flow wind pattern will be weaker today reducing winds on the ridge tops to 4-8 mph. Temperatures are expected to be 5-10 degrees hotter than normal, with high 80’s in the valleys and mid to upper 70’s near the ridges. On the southwest flank, active fire will continue with the potential for single-tree and group torching. The extended outlook calls for moderating weather conditions. Yesterday’s windy, hot and dry conditions caused the fire to become active requiring air resources to work to delay the fire from spreading west towards the containment lines. Several small spot fires were detected in rocky and sparse vegetation on the west side of Polar Bear Mountain. Helicopter bucket drops were effective on the spot fires and kept them in check. The areas with the most fire growth occurred at the confluence of the East and West Forks of Indigo Creek, along Silver Creek, and to the southwest into the Chetco Bar Fire burn area. Some growth occurred on the east perimeter northeast of Chinaman Hat Peak. Reduced visibility due to smoke prevented air tanker flights, so helicopter water and gel drops were used exclusively. Crews continued fuel reduction operations on contingency lines and worked on structure protection in and around Agness. Conditions favorable for high fire activity will persist on Tuesday. Firefighters will continue reducing fuel availability, treating the contingency line on the ridge on the west side of Horse Sign Creek, and treating the ridge west of Fish Hook Creek.
