Overview Klondike Fire West Zone Fire activity picked up yesterday due to the arrival of a dry air mass and gusty winds. Growth was seen at the confluence of Indigo Creek and Illinois River, Snail and Slim Creek drainages, and Little Silver Creek. Despite the moisture from this past weekend, fuels remain very dry and are burning readily. The weather forecast is calling for similar conditions today and likely again tomorrow.Firefighters continue to focus on mopping up and holding the fireline along the 2308 road, as well as providing structure protection in Little Silver Creek drainage. Road graders continue repair work on the roads and contingency lines south and west of the fire perimeter. They are steadily making their way north when the need for contingency lines is eliminated. Special Announcements: A very large, weakened tree of approximately 50 inches in diameter fell across Aufderheide Scenic Byway, Forest Road 19 (FR 19), yesterday closing the road to all traffic. A large front-end loader was brought in to assist cutters in removing the tree so access for work could continue. Today, a specialized scaling contract operation will begin work along FR 19. The purpose is to identify and remove potential falling rock and fire weakened trees that are likely to come loose, fall or slide. Overview Klondike Fire West Zone Fire activity continued to be minimal yesterday with limited spread seen in the Indigo and Horse Sign Creek drainages. Helicopters played a large role in keeping growth in those areas minimal. Structure protection continues in the Silver Creek area. The weather forecast is calling for a drying trend that is expected to result in increased fire activity over the next several days. Gusty winds are also likely to be seen in the fire area. Firefighters are continuing to focus on mopping up and holding the fireline, as well as felling snags and fire-damaged trees along forest roadways. Southwest OR – The 2018 fire season has resulted in a number of emergency area and road closures across the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest. These closures were put in place for the health and safety of both the public and firefighting personnel, and often remain in place even after the flames are extinguished. Forest roads are often included in these closures, and while not all closures have security guards that prevent people from passing through, the RRSNF would like to remind people that these closed roads and areas are considered dangerous until they are assessed for post-fire safety concerns. Things like standing snags, fallen trees across roadways, and persistent fire traffic are also factors in keeping closures in place.The RRSNF is asking people to be aware: Know Before You Go. Southwest OR – Effective immediately, the Bear Camp Road is open to public travel following a week closure due to suppression efforts on the Klondike Fire. The RRSNF and fire officials would like to caution that there is still fire traffic on the road, and that the public should drive slowly and cautiously. After carefully monitoring conditions across the Forest, fire officials have determined that conditions are within specific parameters, including temperature, relative humidity, fuel moisture to start prescribed fire operations in specifically planned units. Prairie City Ranger District fire crews are planning to begin operations on the 16 Road project, located south of Forest Road 16 near Crane Prairie. Crews plan to treat approximately 150 acres starting as early as today, activity will continue through the week on additional acreage if objectives are being met. Also this week, crews on the Blue Mountain Ranger District are scheduled to initiate prescribed fire operations on 450 acres in the Damon North unit, about four miles north of Seneca. Special Announcements: This past weekend, a special team of staff from the McKenzie River Ranger District worked to mitigate hazards posed by fire weakened and damaged trees around the Terwilliger Hot Springs. The fire burned through the springs with varying levels of severity. Approximately, five burned trees were felled. These trees posed the most imminent danger of falling and further damaging the springs and the rock work constructed around them. Additional hazard trees around the hot springs will likely need to be felled in the coming months. Only the minimum number of staff needed to do this work are entering the area due to the myriad of fire hazards that remain in the vicinity of the springs and along Aufderheide Scenic Byway (Forest Service Road 19). Tom Merritt, the incoming IC (Incident Commander) took over command of the Miles Fire at 0600 today (09/17/18). He thanks the outgoing Gila/Las Cruces Type 3 IMT, Ricky Cox IC, for all the good work that they did, and expects the transition to be seamless. Firefighters will continue to patrol and secure the fire’s perimeter as well as repair lines to a more natural condition. Crews are being reallocated to other areas of the fire as work is completed. Personnel are identifying equipment no longer in use for suppression or repair work and will release it to other incidents if needed. Appropriate hazard reduction for employees, contractors, and the public may be needed.
