Fire Update – September 23–24, 2018 (Sunday-Monday) (McLeod Fire Wildfire)
September 23-24, 2018 (Sunday-Monday) Crescent and McLeod Fires update: Crescent: 52,609 acres/ 86% contained McLeod: 24,411 acres/ 91% Total fire acreage: 77,020 acres Crescent Mountain and McLeod Fire crews continue to repair damage caused by firefighting operations, using excavators and hand-crews to mend and obscure dozer and hand-dug line. The intent of suppression repair is to minimize soil erosion and restore damaged ecological functions. All repairs occur under advisement of local Resource Advisors. Smoke and flame are occasionally spotted within the fire perimeter where heavy fuels retain heat that intensifies by mid- afternoon. This causes the fire, lingering in dry grasses and forbs under the heavy fuels, to creep slowly. It is not unusual for individual trees to occasionally torch. No visible smoke was observed during a reconnaissance flight of Holman Fire Saturday. Weather: A dry northwest flow develops today, into Monday, as upper level high pressure builds across...

September 23, 2018 Klondike Fire Update (Klondike Fire Wildfire)
Klondike Fire Update-September 23, 2018Klondike Fire West Zone Higher relative humidity over the fire area on Saturday reduced fire activity compared to Friday. The same three primary areas around the fire perimeter with active burning were near Horse Sign Creek, near the confluence of Indigo Creek and the Illinois River, and in the Slim Creek drainage at the north end of the fire. Two areas of active burning that are farther from containment lines are Montana Springs and in the Chance Creek drainage. The fire growth identified by the infrared flight was 460 acres. Yesterday’s moisture was short-lived, as drier air returns today. Fire personnel are finalizing a plan to burn near the 2308 Road and a small section of the 23 Road when conditions allow. This widening of the containment line is planned for two important reasons: Having a more secure containment line at the north end of the Slim Creek/Indigo Creek drainages will provide a “catcher’s mitt” – a...

September 22, 2018 Klondike Fire Update (Klondike Fire Wildfire)
Fire Update – September 22, 2018 Klondike Fire West Zone Friday afternoon, a smoke column from the Klondike Fire was visible throughout the region. An overnight infrared flight verified fire growth of 2,912 acres, primarily in the Chance Creek and Lake Creek drainages, west of Chrome Ridge. This fire growth resulted from a combination of low relative humidity, winds from the west, drainages that lined up with the winds, and extremely dry brush and downed wood. Ash fall was reported as far as 18 miles away, in Merlin. The smoke impacts were greater than the threat to fire containment lines, because Chrome Ridge Road happens to also be the west fireline from the Taylor Creek Fire. Over 10 miles of previously-burned area lies between the fire and Merlin. Helicopters dropping water kept fire growth to a minimum in the three critical areas for holding the northwest edge: the Slim Creek drainage, the confluence of Indigo Creek and the Illinois River, and a...
