Klondike Fire West ZoneSafety continues to be the number one concern for fire and agency officials. If you are traveling or hunting near the fire area please be aware that firefighters are working in the woods. They wear yellow shirts for visibility and safety. Rocky debris and logs continue to fall on roads, creating safety hazards. The presence of large equipment poses additional threats to human safety. In order for crews to efficiently complete this important repair work, your cooperation with road and area closures is essential. Yesterday, crews began the transition from fire suppression to suppression repair. While some crews and equipment head home, different types of equipment arrive to accomplish different tasks. Although the fire is not actively burning there is still a lot more work to do. Some equipment and supplies are being removed by helicopter. A Type 4 Incident Management Team will take command of the fire on Tuesday, October 9th. This will be the final Natchez Fire Update unless conditions change. The Fire Information Phone and email will no longer be available. Please contact the Klamath National Forest at 530-841-4485 with any questions. Current Status: Acres: 38,134 (no change) Containment: 89% Total Personnel: 25 Widespread rain over the fire has prohibited fire spread for the past week, and smoke production has been significantly reduced. Fuels continue to smolder on the southwest side of the fire. Mostly clear skies and relatively dry weather conditions are expected over the fire area for the next few days, but wet fuels will prohibit fire spread. Activities: Crews will continue with repair and rehabilitation on the controlled fire edge and monitor the uncontrolled fire perimeter in Young’s Valley. Incendio Klondike. Zona Oeste. El dia de ayer, la cantidad de lluvias inesperadas se marco un cambio fundamental que va de extinction del fuego a reparaciones de extinction del mismo. Debido a la cantidad de lluvia, existen muy pocas posibilidades de que el incendio siga extendiendose por lo que ahora los esfuerzos seran enfocados en la implementacion de acciones para reparar mas de 433 millas de lineas de fuego, las cuales incluyen lineas de control del fuego, lineas para bulldozers, caminos y otro tipo de barreras que fue utilizado para detener el fuego. En millas, esta distancia es equivalente a manejar desde Portland, Oregon hasta Redding, California. Se espera la presencia de condiciones climaticas frescas y con brisas, asi como la posibilidad de lluvias a travez del dia Sabado seguido de condiciones secas durante la proxima semana. Klondike Fire West ZoneYesterday’s anticipated season-ending rain event marked a pivotal shift from fire suppression to suppression repair. Due to the amount of rain, further fire spread is unlikely so efforts will now focus on implementing actions to repair over 433 miles of fire line, including hand lines, dozer lines, roadways and other fire breaks. This distance would be equivalent to driving from Portland, Oregon to Redding, California. Cool and breezy conditions are expected with possible showers into Saturday and drier weather throughout the week. The Burned Area Emergency Response (BAER) team continues working to identify threats to human life and safety, property and critical natural and cultural resources and determine how to mitigate risks. Zona Oeste.Las prediciones meteorologicas nos dicen que habra una precipitacion acerca de un cuarto a media pulgada de lluvia a travez del dia de hoy, aunado a bajas temperaturas, vientos fuertes y una disminucion en la presencia de nubes. Se esperan rezagos de lluvias ligeras para el dia Sabado temprano por la manana. El dia de ayer, el equipo de rehabilitacion de emergencia para areas incendiadas (BAER) del incendio Klondike, se reunio con agencias y organizaciones de cooperacion a fin de dar a saber el alcance del trabajo que estan realizando en el area. El equipo BAER, evaluara las cuencas afectadas por el fuego con el proposito de identificar peligros inminentes para la vida de las personas y seguridad en general, asi como tambien el reconocimiento de propiedades en estado critico incluyendo recursos naturales y culturales. BAER Team Delivers Assessments of South Umpqua Complex Fires (Miles Fire BAER Burned Area Emergency Response)

A Burned Area Emergency Response (BAER) Team working on the Umpqua and Rogue River- Siskiyou National Forests has completed their assessment of the South Umpqua Complex fires, including the Miles, Columbus, and Snowshoe fires. Part of the assessment includes a map showing “soil burn severity” to the wildfires to help land managers determine the potential risks of floods, soil erosion, and debris flows. A team of soil scientists, hydrologists, engineers and others use this map to pinpoint treatments to reduce risks to critical Forest Service infrastructure, safety of the public, and natural and cultural resources. The soil burn severity mapping indicates that the majority of the acres burned in the South Umpqua Complex Fires burned at low soil burn severity. Of the 53,936 acres burned at the time of the assessment, only 2 percent is estimated as being high severity; 22 percent is considered moderate; 72 percent low, and 4 percent is very low or unburned. Klondike Fire West ZoneWeather forecasts predict a quarter to a half inch of rainfall starting today and lasting through the evening, with falling temperatures, increasing winds, and lowering cloud cover. Light showers are expected to linger into early Saturday. Yesterday the Burned Area Emergency Response (BAER) Team for the Klondike fire met with cooperating agencies and organizations to discuss the purpose and scope of their work. The BAER Team is completing an assessment of burned watersheds and will identify imminent threats to human life and safety, property and critical natural and cultural resources. They will soon make recommendations for mitigating these threats. The briefing was well received by those attending. “We’re ready for the next step,” said Mike Robison, District Manager of the Coos Forest Protective Association. Current Status: Acres: 38,134 (no change) Containment: 84% Total Personnel: 46 Cooler temperatures and light rains along with higher humidity levels have precluded fire spread for the last few days, although fuels continue to smolder on the southwest side of the fire. Thursday is predicted to see slightly warmer and drier weather followed by cooler and wetter conditions on Friday and Saturday. Activities for Thursday-Sunday (October 4th-7th): An additional crew has arrived to monitor the fire near Young’s Valley, assess needs for fire line rehabilitation, and scout for spot fires in Clear Creek. Fire line rehabilitation will continue near Poker Flat and road repair will continue on Road 18N07 west of the fire. Smoke: Recent weather has resulted in good air quality throughout the area. Zona Oeste.El dia de ayer, los bomberos continuaron con la labores de patrullar la zona del incendio, eliminando fuentes de calor en el terreno y monitoreando las areas alrededor de Slim Creek y Montana Spring. Los medios de apoyo han logrado progresar en la reparacion de los danos causados al tartar de suprimir el incendio y al remover los escombros de los arboles.Se planea continuar con el mismo trabajo para el dia de hoy. El dia de hoy se espera un dia soleado y niveles de humedad bajos. Asi como tambien se espera que la actividad en el incendio sea minima. De un cuarto a media pulgada de lluvia es pronosticado para el dia Viernes asi como tambien temperaturas mas bajas. El dia Sabado, se espera recibir mas precipitacion por la manana. Klondike Fire West ZoneYesterday firefighters continued to patrol the fire area, mop up remaining sources of heat and monitor the areas around Slim Creek and Montana Spring. Resources made good progress repairing damage caused by fire suppression actions and removing woody debris. Today’s work will continue all of these activities. More sunshine and lower humidity levels are expected today, but fire activity is still anticipated to be minimal. One fourth to a half inch of rain is forecast for Friday, along with lower temperatures. On Saturday, light showers are expected during the morning hours. Fire suppression repair efforts will likely increase after Friday’s expected rainfall. Firefighting resources continue to be released when they are no longer needed and when appropriate based on weather.
