Fire The Klondike Fire is 72% contained. There was no infrared (IR) flight yesterday to observe fire growth, therefore there are no updates to total acreage. Minimal fire spread is expected today due to residual fuel moisture from yesterday's wet weather. Some creeping and smoldering is expected around Indigo Creek, Horse Sign Drainage, and within the fire interior. Smoke Today The rains brought good air quality throughout the area yesterday. A light increase in smoke production can be expected today. Winds will be from the NE in the morning, shifting to NW winds in the afternoon. Areas to the southwest can expect light to moderate smoke in the morning and again overnight when winds shift back the the NE. Areas to the south of fire activity may experience light to moderate smoke impacts throughout the day. Areas to the east may experience moderate to light smoke in the early afternoon. September 17, 2018 Update for Klondike Fire (Klondike Fire Wildfire)

Overview Klondike Fire West Zone Fire activity was minimal yesterday with some fire growth reported in the Indigo Creek and Silver Creek drainages. Helicopters were used to keep these areas of growth in check. Small amounts of rain fell over the western portions of the fire area, but not enough to change fire behavior significantly on a long-term basis. A drying trend is forecast for the area and is expected to bring about a rise in fire activity for the next few days. Firefighters are continuing to focus on mopping up and holding the fireline, as well as felling snags and fire-damaged trees along forest roadways. Road graders will continue repair work on the roads and contingency lines west of the fire perimeter. Work on construction of check lines between the North Fork of Indigo Creek and Cedar Mountain, which are in place as potential control lines, should be completed today. IRON EAST FIRE FINAL UPDATE 9/17/18 9:00AM Cle Elum, WA – This is the final update for the Iron Creek Fire. This team will be transferring command of the Iron Creek fire on Monday to the local unit. The incoming Incident Commander is Kevin McPhee and the Incident Command Post will be located at the Cle Elum Ranger District. Crews have made excellent progress. The fire is now 90% contained. Total acreage for the Iron East Fire is 117 acres. Drawdown of resources is underway as fire severity decreases. There are fewer than 100 personnel on the fire. Mop up and rehabilitation work will occur over the coming days. Hot spots and smoke will be present in the interior until heavy rain or snow. Ensuring public safety and the safety of firefighters is the utmost priority. Old Blewett Pass is closed for fire activity. September 16, 2018This weekend, a special team of staff from the McKenzie River Ranger District are working to mitigate hazards posed by fire weakened and damaged trees around the Terwilliger Hot Springs. The fire burned through the springs with varying levels of severity. Approximately five burned trees that pose the most imminent danger of falling and further damaging the springs and the rock work constructed around them, were felled. Only the minimum number of staff needed to do this work are entering the area due to the myriad of fire hazards that remain in the vicinity of the springs and along Aufderheide Scenic Byway (Forest Service Road

Fire Crews continue to make good progress on containment, with the fire now 67% contained. There was no infrared (IR) flight yesterday to observe fire growth, therefore there are no updates to total acreage. A light rain system is expected to pass through the area today. Though rains will be light, the system should hold down fire activity for much of the day with just some slow creeping and smoldering. Smoke Today All forecast areas are seeing good air quality this morning. With the front coming in and light rains and cloud cover predicted expect good to moderate conditions throughout the day. Agness may be the exception, with the potential for unhealthy conditions late morning/early afternoon, following typical patterns. Because wetting rains are forecasted today, firefighters will hold and improve the line along the Forest Road Spur #530 and remove snags and debris that may have fallen over the road if weather conditions allow. The Naches Initial Attack Crew spotted two puffs of smoke well inside the interior of the fire’s edge from the White Pass Ski Area. They also hiked south to Hogback Mountain where they saw little heat down the Miriam Drainage, to the west of where the fire started in the drainage on July 30. As of Sunday, Level 2 fire restrictions still exist on the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest prohibiting building, maintaining, attending or using a fire, campfire, or stove fire, including briquette fires, and torches. On Monday, that will change to Level 1 allowing some fires in designated campgrounds, special use areas and in wilderness areas. Pacific Northwest Incident Management Team 2, along with the Okanogan-Wenatchee NF, will host a community meeting Monday, Sept. 17 at 6 p.m. in the Red Barn, 51 N. Hwy. 20 in Winthrop. The meeting will feature a video and Google Earth presentation showing the fire effects of the Crescent Mountain and McLeod Fires, as well as an update on the current status and future plans for the fires. The team will livestream the meeting on the Crescent Mountain Facebook page for those who are unable to attend in person.

IRON EAST FIRE UPDATE 9/16/18 8:00AM Cle Elum, WA – The fire is now 75% contained. Total acreage for the Iron East Fire is 117 acres. Acreage estimates were updated due to improved fire mapping. Drawdown of resources is underway as fire severity decreases. There are fewer than 100 personnel on the fire. Hot spots and smoke will be present in the interior until heavy rain or snow. The fire perimeter is fully lined. Firefighters will patrol and mop up around the perimeter up to 50 feet including hazard trees to secure the line. If a hot spot is identified, firefighters will dig down to the spot, bring it up to the surface, douse it with water and use other methods to extinguish all heat. Water bars will be constructed at an angle to divert water runoff on hand and dozer lines, this assists in diverting water across the roadway while minimizing erosion.
