Smokejumper History At Luftkin Loft Near Winthrop (Cub Creek 2 Fire Wildfire)
A World War II vintage Quonset Hut a couple of miles from Winthrop, WA is testament to the role this part of the country has played in the history of wildland firefighting. The Lufkin Loft marks the location of the birthplace of Smoke Jumping when Franklin Lufkin became one of the first four men to do “experimental” jumps from an airplane to see if an “average man” could live through such an experience. Lufkin then inspired class after class of jumpers with his skill and courage. That heritage continues with Daren Belsby now Base Manager, keeper of the Loft and trained by Lufkin as a member of the class of 1986. Two of the first women jumpers were also in that class. 500 of the approximately 5,000 smoke jumpers trained since those pioneering jumps in 1940 have passed through the North Cascades Smoke Jumper Base. The Loft, however, is living on borrowed time. A planned runway improvement will likely clear it away in the near future. While other bases are newer and offer...
