Winthrop, WA – The Cedar Creek, Cub Creek 2, and Delancy fires are burning on the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest and public and private lands within Okanogan County. Safety Note: The Cedar and Cub Creek Fires are active fires, and certain roads and trails in the community and Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest remain closed for your safety. The public is reminded to stay out of closed areas for your safety and the safety of firefighters. Fire Information Line: (509) 557-0740 (8:00 am to 8:00 pm daily) Cedar Creek Fire: The fire is 55,187 acres and 87% contained. Firefighters and engines mopped up hot spots and smoke near Wolf Creek and along Highway 20 on Wednesday. DNR resources will mop up near the 1145 road to ensure all infrastructure is protected. Yesterday: The weather was conducive to successful burnout operations for adding depth and strengthening firelines. To the south, firefighters worked from Slide Peak along Forest Road 8410 to tie in with dozer line. On the North side of the fire, they continued with the previous days’ burnout operation between Dove Point and Junior Spike, utilizing hand crews and aerial ignition. The helicopter mounted plastic sphere dispenser (PSD) distributes spheres that are about the shape and size of ping pong balls. The plastic spheres contain potassium permanganate and are injected with ethylene glycol (antifreeze). A chemical reaction causes the sphere to ignite approximately 20 to 30 seconds after injection. Summit Trail Fire Update 9-2 (Summit Trail Wildfire)
Inchelium, WA – Northwest Incident Management Team 7 will transfer command of the Summit Trail Fire to Southwest Area Incident Management Team 4 tomorrow morning at 7:00 a.m. This will be Northwest Team 7’s last update with Southwest Team 4 continuing updates for future operational periods. With the cooler temperatures and rain over the area Tuesday night, crews were unable to continue burning operations on the north and northeast edge due to fuel moisture. Firefighters will continue to monitor the conditions and look for opportunities to complete these operations. Crews on the north flank of the fire will continue to secure indirect fire lines put into place as well as contingency lines. The 10-acre spot fire on the northern flank has been fully lined and is in mop up status. Firefighters will scout out areas to the north for potential additional fire lines. Summit Trail Fire update 9-1 (Summit Trail Wildfire)
Inchelium, WA – Cooler temperatures throughout yesterday provided firefighters with favorable conditions to continue burn operations on the north edge of the fire, in addition to continued line improvements and mop up of earlier spot fires. Burn operations also took place near the Bitteroot Mountain area where firefighters have been working to secure line in difficult terrain. Precipitation received over the fire last night will moderate fire behavior today. Crews will continue to work on improvement to direct line on the north and northeast edge in the Stall Creek area. Firefighters will scout areas along the north and northeast flank for potential burning operations to improve containment lines.
