NORTHWEST INCIDENT MANAGEMENT TEAM #10 Al Lawson-Incident Commander Firefighters Continue to Focus on Fire Repair Work Sunday, September 17, 2017 Fire: Uno Peak Completion: 20% Acres: 8,726 Start Date: August 30, 2017 Cause: Under Investigation Location: 15 miles NW of Manson, WA Total Personnel: 271 Fuels/Topography: Timber, grass, rugged terrain Yesterday: Majority of the active fire continues to be primarily in the Lone Fir Creek drainage on the northwest side of the fire. Crews continued to focus on fire suppression line repair and equipment backhaul on the alternate Coyote Ridge containment line. Most of the hose along Coyote Ridge was retrieved. The majority of the road improvement work has been completed; however, road maintenance will continue throughout the next couple days. Enumclaw Washington, September 17, 2017 - The Sawmill Creek Fire is currently 1098 acres with 0% containment. No structures have been damaged or destroyed. Firefighters remain on the line today, making their way towards the fires edge and building direct containment lines. Divisions continue to focus efforts on The Dalles, Crystal Mountain Communities, and Alta Crystal Resort areas; they have completed control lines and have placed sprinkler systems to assist in structure defense. As the fire backs down slopes in the area firefighters are mopping up near the control lines. The fire continues to threaten the watershed for the City of Tacoma, industrial timberland, DNR protected lands, and the United States Forest Service lands. State Highway 410 remains closed at SR 123, east of Cayuse Pass; the closure includes Bumping River Road and its associated trails. A storm system will impact the fire area starting today. Smoke: Widespread haze and smoke will continue through Sunday. Heavier concentrations will occur in areas near active fire perimeters. Expect overnight smoke to settle in valley bottoms creating pockets of higher levels of PM 2.5. Fire: The Jolly Mountain fire is currently burning in the Yakima River basin on the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest, north of Cle Elum, WA. The current fire size is 36,808 acres an increase of 2,586 acres Moderate fire behavior with torching and backing. The Uno Peak fire is currently burning north of Lake Chelan with a current size of 8,726 acres an increase of 0 acres. Minimal fire behavior with isolated torching, flanking and backing. Date Started: Aug. 11, 2017, Cause: Lightning; Acreage: 52,502 (Norse Peak), 3,739 (American), 56,241 (Total); Containment: 12%, Structures Damaged or Destroyed: None; Injuries: 3 (Minor); Total Personnel: 635; Fire Resources: 17 Crews, 24 Engines, 4 Helicopters, 2 Bulldozers, 10 water tenders.Fire Summary: The Norse Peak and American Fires main influence has been both fuel and topography dominated. Fire travels along the ground looking for fuels to ignite. One of these major fuel sources are the many dead and down trees. Other fuels consist of grass and shrubs. The standing trees are mixed, large, densely packed conifers. Single or group tree torching remains a threat due to the number of tree branches (ladder fuels) being heated and dried by the surface fire. NORTHWEST INCIDENT MANAGEMENT TEAM #10 Al Lawson-Incident Commander Minimal Fire Activity and Firefighters Begin Fire Repair Work Saturday, September 16, 2017 Fire: Uno Peak Completion: 15% Acres: 8,726 Start Date: August 30, 2017 Cause: Under Investigation Location: 15 miles NW of Manson, WA Total Personnel: 297 Fuels/Topography: Timber, grass, rugged terrain Yesterday: A small portion of the total fire area remained active yesterday, primarily in the Lone Fir Creek drainage on the northwest side of the fire, where the fire is slowly backing downhill within the 2001 Rex Creek fire area. With cooler conditions fire growth overall continued to be minimal. Other portions of the fire had moderate fire behavior. The fire remained approximately 2 miles upslope of Lake Chelan. Sawmill Fire and Norse Peak Fire - North Zone Evacuation Information and Guide Sept. 13, 2017 As the fire continues to slowly burn down to the highway, representatives from the Incident Management Team, Pierce County Sheriff’s Department, Pierce County Department of Emergency Management, and Fire Chief Paul Sowers of the Greenwater Fire Department identified a plan for awareness and evacuation areas. Careful and strategic planning, favorable weather and the judicious use of several tactical firefighting strategies has resulted in the successful containment on more than 30 percent of the Jolly Mountain Fire. Yesterday’s Activities: Aerial resources assisted crews with firing operations from Salmon la Sac south to Howson Creek. Along the western perimeter north of Morgan Creek, firefighters ensured the fire stayed within control lines. Mop up and patrol operations continued from Morgan Creek east along the southern perimeter to the Teanaway River. Where mop up is complete, crews began backhauling hose and other materials. Along the North Fork Teanaway Road, firing operations to prevent eastern spread of the fire continued. Movement of the fire along the northern perimeter remained limited with air tankers and helicopters working to keep the fire in check with strategic water drops as needed. Evacuation Advisory To Be Reduced from Bear Creek to Night Sky Drive on Saturday Kittitas County, WA - 09/15/2017 - Effective at 8:00 AM Saturday morning (9/16), the Kittitas County Emergency Operations Center will officially reduce the Evacuation Level 3 Advisory to a Level 2 Advisory from Bear Creek to Night Sky Drive, allowing more residents affected by the Jolly Mountain Fire to return home. This advisory change affects all residences north of Bear Creek, including the Bell Creek community, Morgan Creek community, and the Timber Ridge community. Residents returning home are asked to leave all gates open and to use extra caution on the roads, as fire personnel and equipment are still actively working and moving through the area. The Kittitas County Fire Marshal also advises that all propane tanks were shut off and technicians placed a “lock out-tag out” lock on each tank. They have grown in starts and stops and now Norse Peak is over 50,000 acres and the American is close to 4,000 acres.In those five weeks:The suppression progress has been steady; brush has been removed and chipped around structures and roadways; downed and dead trees have been removed as part of our fuel reduction effort.In preparation for the fire’s approach, over 87 miles of water hose has been laid; the fire has over 100 water pumps connected to these hoses; line has been dug. Areas of smoke early in the day will turn to hazy conditions in the afternoon and evening. Expect smoke to settle in the valleys again tonight. Fire: The Jolly fire is at 34,222 acres an increase of 272 acres. Fire behavior was moderate with group torching spotting and backing. The Norse Peak fire is at 52,502 acres with no increase in acreage. Moderate fire behavior with isolated torching and backing fire observed.
