August 9 Update (Sheep Creek Fire Wildfire)
Northport, WA - PUBLIC AND FIRE FIGHTER SAFETY IS THE NUMBER ONE PRIORITY. The NE Washington Type 3 Incident Management Team asks the public to avoid Sheep Creek road and surrounding areas due to fire apparatus. The Sheep Creek fire started on July 30, 2018 in north Stevens County near the town of Northport. The fire perimeter and acreage remain within the boundaries of Flagstaff and Sheep Creek roads and is comprised of mixed conifer with pockets of logging slash and standing dead timber. Mop up operations continue throughout the perimeter of the fire. Two pieces of logging equipment remain on the fire to assist the crews – a bulldozer and a skidgeon. The fuel and terrain require such apparatus to access difficult areas. Five 20-person crews of Washington National Guard soldiers and airmen and women are integrated with fire crews on the line. Community Meeting: An informational meeting at the Plain Community Church Wednesday night was attended by about 250 people. An additional 300 people watched the live Facebook stream, and the video is available for viewing any time. Additional meetings will be held as needed to inform the public and answer questions. Cougar Creek Fire: The Cougar Creek Fire, 20 miles northwest of Entiat, is10,723 acres. A total of 895 personnel, including 22 crews, 6 aircraft, 28 engines, and 12 bulldozers are being shared between the Cougar Creek and Lost Fires. Very high temperatures and low humidity Wednesday led to increased fire activity on the southwest side. The fire crossed the Mad River north of Burgess Cabin between Alma and Wilma Creeks. Airtankers dropped retardant along six miles of ridgetops to slow the fire’s southwest spread. YESTERDAY: Excessive heat and dry weather continues to set in over the fire, providing extreme conditions for the firefighters on the line. Fire managers focused resources on areas of the fire that have retained heat. Ground crews continued to stretch hoselays in to the interior portions of the fire for mop up operations. Aerial resources were used to support firefighters on the ground in suppressing pockets of heat. Structure protection firefighters utilized a National Park Service watercraft for access to residences along the waterfront to install hose and reduce fuels. Night operations patrolled the containment lines to ensure fire was held within the lines. TODAY: An excessive heat warning and gusty winds are forecasted for the area today. Firefighters will be focusing on mop up to ensure there are no hidden hot spots. Current Activity: The Crescent Mountain Fire was active again yesterday, pushing west and northeast into the Lake Chelan Sawtooth Wilderness. Overnight, the Crescent Mountain Fire consumed the footprint of the Gilbert Fire, so we will be reporting one fire. Firefighters were successful yesterday in conducting a large tactical firing operation in the War Creek Ridge area which should reduce the threat of spread to the southeast. Hamma Hamma, WA – The Maple fire is located 23 miles North of Shelton, WA, above the community of Hamma Hamma. The fire is burning in steep terrain on the Jefferson Ridge Line and North of Jefferson Creek. Elk Lake trail runs through the middle of the fire. The Maple fire has burned 810 acres, is 5 percent contained and has roughly 163 personnel currently working the fire. Crews and equipment ordered earlier in the week are now beginning to arrive. We expect to have around 300 personnel on the fire by tomorrow. We are also expecting more equipment. Our priorities are to keep the fire from spreading further East, North and South. Public Meeting: We have a public meeting scheduled for Friday, August 10, 2018 at 7:00 pm. The meeting will be held at the Hamma Hamma fire station, 34571 N US Hwy 101, Lilliwaup, WA 98555. Helicopter bucket drops were used to slow the spread of the fire around the perimeter, including the Miriam Creek headwaters.
