InciWeb Articles WA - September 4, 2022 - 9:15am
White River and Irving Peak Fires Update September 4, 2022 - 9:00 AM Plain, WA – Lightning started the White River and Irving Peak Fires on August 11. The fires are burning on the Okanagan-Wenatchee National Forest, northwest of Plain, WA.  Suppression Strategy – Fire managers are continuing to implement our long-term strategy including the use of primary and contingency perimeter lines for containment. Tactics include completion and reinforcement of fire lines (roads and hand line). Operations – A more seasonal, cooler weather pattern moves over the fire area tomorrow moderating fire behavior. Smoke may continue to be visible over the next several weeks as remaining interior fuels continue to smolder and burn out. Firefighters will continue to actively manage both fires over the coming weeks with a long-term strategy in place. Due to moderating fire behavior, fire updates will transition to every other day meaning there will be no update tomorrow. Daily updates may resume...

Rum Creek Fire morning update for Sunday, Sept. 4 (Rum Creek Fire Wildfire)

Inciweb Articles OR - September 4, 2022 - 9:13am
Containment rises on Rum Creek Fire MERLIN, Ore. – Firefighters are taking advantage of cooler, more humid weather to make progress containing the Rum Creek Fire. In the last few days, containment has risen to 27%. “Containment” is an expression of confidence that the control lines will hold given the expected fire behavior and weather. Nearly the entire Rum Creek Fire is encircled by well-defined control lines. Natural fire spread or tactical firing operations have burned the fuels adjacent to these lines. Crews are mopping up burned areas near the fire’s edges, searching for any hidden pockets of heat that might flare up later and allow the fire to escape fire lines. All of these remaining hot spots must be extinguished to secure the fire edge. Portions of the fire line will not be declared “contained” until fire managers agree that pieces of fire perimeter have been thoroughly cooled and will not escape. An increase in containment represents a lot of work: planning...

Skies will be clear most of the day. Conditions will be very dry and temperatures above normal, into the 80s and lower 90s. Firefighters were able to locate and contain several spot fires west of FSR 45 with the support of aircraft. Several smokejumpers have been assigned on the north end of the fire to wrap the Indian Rock Lookout with protective, heat-resistant fabric. Increased fire activity and high winds in the area have created challenges to accomplishing the project. Wrapping of the lookout...

Elevated temperatures and increased winds contributed to fire growth inside the containment line.  Due to the steep, rugged terrain and heavy dead and down timber litter, it is unsafe for firefighters to engage directly along the fire edge, so indirect line is being utilized toward the objective of full suppression.  There is a closure in place on the Colville National Forest. The closure encompasses: Sullivan Creek/Pass Creek- This closure begins at the junction of the NFS Road 2200500/2200250 and the NFS Road 2200000 to...

Spanish - Rum Creek Fire evening update for Saturday, Sept. 3 (Rum Creek Fire Wildfire)

Inciweb Articles OR - September 4, 2022 - 6:02am

Rum Creek Fire evening update for Saturday, Sept. 3 (Rum Creek Fire Wildfire)

Inciweb Articles OR - September 3, 2022 - 9:04pm
Tactical firing operations aid Rum Creek Fire suppressionMERLIN, Ore. – Since Wednesday, containment of the Rum Creek Fire has grown from 1 percent to 27 percent, largely due to successful tactical firing operations and direct line construction. On the southwest flank of the fire, crews are mopping up a 50-foot buffer between recently burned control lines. Tactical patrols are expanding mop-up from 200 to 300 feet around the community of Galice after two spot fires were extinguished Friday. Mop-up is the process of extinguishing or removing burning material near control lines, felling snags, and trenching logs to prevent them from rolling after an area has burned. The 60 to 80 degree slopes in the river canyon and nearby drainages make trenching a key part of preventing logs and rocks from rolling free of unstable soils. Clearer skies this afternoon allowed fixed wing aircraft and helicopters to help firefighters on the ground manage tactical firing operations into the evening...
