Rum Creek Fire morning update for Monday, Sept. 5 (Rum Creek Fire Wildfire)
Firefighters prepare for another windy dry spellMERLIN, Ore. – Tomorrow’s weather will provide a test for the fire lines. If the fire stays within the current footprint, fire managers can be more confident that it will not escape the fire lines in the future. Rum Creek Fire will be under a Haines 6 tomorrow, the highest level on the index, indicating the greatest potential for rapid fire growth. Also, the National Weather Service has issued a Fire Weather Watch for Tuesday afternoon and evening for the Rum Creek Fire area. The forecast calls for high temperatures, gusty winds and low relative humidity. The Haines Index is a tool used to estimate the effect of atmospheric dryness and stability on fire growth potential. When the atmosphere is unstable, windy conditions allow mixing of air near the ground with air higher in the atmosphere. This mixing provides ample fresh air flow to a fire, allowing it to burn freely and potentially grow rapidly and develop a smoke plume. These...

Spanish - Rum Creek Fire evening update for Sunday, Sept. 4 (Rum Creek Fire Wildfire)
Rum Creek Fire evening update for Sunday, Sept. 4 (Rum Creek Fire Wildfire)
Firefighters protecting resources while suppressing fire MERLIN, Ore. – Suppressing the Rum Creek Fire remains the teams’ primary objective, but firefighters are also mindful of protecting and preserving the resources that make the Rogue River and surrounding lands special. The Rogue River was among the first eight rivers to be listed under the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act of 1968 for its outstanding scenery and natural resources. Several strategies are being utilized to protect those values. While its thick bark provides resistance to wildfires, Port Orford cedar is vulnerable to a pathogen carried by water and wet soils that causes root rot. To prevent its spread, a disinfectant is added to engines and water tenders working the fire lines. Salmonids are being protected in several ways: screening over pump hoses to prevent them from being pulled from the stream, not obstructing more than half of stream flow when creating pools to draw water from, and fine gravels are...

Cedar Creek Fire Update, Sept. 4 (Cedar Creek Fire Wildfire)
Current Situation: Fire activity was moderate yesterday due to cloud cover in the morning and higher humidities. Firefighters attempted to engage the fire where it crossed the retardant line near Edith Creek, but could not gain safe access because of extremely steep slopes. Firefighters initiated a strategic firing operation in the southwest area of the fire on Forest Service Road 2421. Humidities were very high, making ignition difficult, but they were able to make some progress. Today, fire behavior is expected to be slow and steady because of seasonal weather in the forecast. Today’s Activities: Fire managers have started implementing a new plan in the southeast area of the fire, where the fire crossed over the fire-retardant line. Crews will be enhancing the area around Black Creek to use as a barrier to stop fire growth to the south. In the northern area, firefighters are utilizing Winchester Trail as a checking line to slow fire growth. In the southwest, crews are utilizing...
