A Fire Line Around the Kettle River Fire! (Kettle River Fire Wildfire)

InciWeb Articles WA - August 17, 2018 - 8:19pm
"A fire line has now been successfully completed around the entire perimeter of the Kettle River Fire," said Operations Chief Al DiBenedetto at Friday night's community meeting at the Eagle Cliff Grange. Having a line around the fire does not mean that the fire is contained. Those lines have to be improved and the area adjacent to the lines must be mopped up and secure before that section of line is called contained. Hand crews will continue the tough and dangerous work through the weekend to work toward containment of the fire.

Watson Creek Fire in Lake County increases to 8,500 acres (Watson Creek Fire Wildfire)

Inciweb Articles OR - August 17, 2018 - 4:00pm
PAISLEY, Ore. – The Watson Creek Fire remained active overnight and throughout the day, growing to approximately 8,500 acres. Fire crews continue to struggle with difficult terrain, access, and the dense accumulation of standing dead and downed material on the ground. The fire was reported Wednesday afternoon approximately 15 miles west of Paisley and is currently burning on the Fremont-Winema National Forest Paisley Ranger District. Firefighter safety remains an issue due to numerous hazard trees and standing snags. Low visibility in the area remains a concern for firefighting aircraft working the fire. Breezy northwest winds may affect the spread of the fire, possibly causing the fire spread to shift to the east and southeast. No thunderstorms are predicted in the area today. Resources assigned to the fire include two fixed wing Air Attack platforms, four helicopters, 14 engines, 8 water tenders, 4 dozers, four 20-person crews, two faller modules, and approximately 100...

InciWeb Articles WA - August 17, 2018 - 2:59pm

The fire continues to burn in grass, brush and timber. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time. Yesterday, crews working on the northwest perimeter were pulled from the area due to increased fire activity in heavy fuels and steep terrain. The direct attack strategy on the northwest corner of the fire has been reevaluated and the alternate indirect line has now been converted to the primary line of control. Firefighters will continue to assess opportunities to reduce acres burned. Fire crews will now focus on preparing the area for future burnout operations. To provide for safety of the public and firefighters, an indirect strategy will be used. Helicopters continue supporting fire suppression activities by checking the spread of fire and making water drops to slow the fire where crews work. Firefighters made...

Changing weather increasing fire activity (Taylor Creek Fire Wildfire)

Inciweb Articles OR - August 17, 2018 - 2:06pm
With the smoke inversion expected to lift over the Taylor Creek and Klondike fires today, there is potential for increased fire activity. This is likely to produce large smoke columns visible from the communities of Selma, Grants Pass, Merlin and Cave Junction until Sunday afternoon. Winds out of the northeast are forecast to increase today with gusts of 20-25 mph. The wind is expected to push smoke out of the area. For the past several days, the smoke has smothered the fires and moderated fire activity. Today’s clearer air will breathe life into the fire and increase fire behavior. However, the northeast winds should push the fire to the southwest, into the burn scar of last year’s Chetco Bar Fire and away from communities. Fire managers are aware and prepared for the change in the weather and increased fire behavior. More crews are being staged in the southeast part of the Klondike Fire. The smoke dispersion may allow aircraft to support firefighters working on the ground. If...

There will be a community fire information meeting today at 6:00 p.m. at the Grange on 2nd Street in Happy Camp. Weather: Continued hot, dry, and sunny due to high pressure over the fire area. Poor humidity recovery on the ridges last night will lead to daytime relative humidity in the twenties to teens. Max temperatures: 90-100 in the valleys and upper 80s on the ridges. Yesterday’s Activities: Patrol, mop up, and backhaul of equipment continued on the north half of the fire. This area of the fire contains most of the established containment lines.
