Republic, WA – Mop up operations will continue as fire crews will focus on remaining hotspots, primarily at the head of the fire. Chipping of branches and small woody debris is expected to be completed by the end of the day. Tenders will be driving up and down N. Fork Trout Creek Road and Rose Valley Road to supply water for mop up operations. Yield to tenders on the road, use caution while driving in the area and respect the closed road sign at the Empire Sno-Park. The Kelly Mountain Fire started at approximately 11:00am on August 11th and was a part of eleven lightning and storm related fires reported in the Republic/Curlew/Toroda area. Local resources from US Forest Service, Washington State Department of Natural Resources along with private contractors responded to the Kelly Mountain fire that grew rapidly due to strong winds and extremely dry conditions. Blue River, OR, August 19, 2018 – Firefighting resources, including engines and aircraft, from the Forest Service and Oregon Department of Forestry are responding to a new fire recently reported on the McKenzie River Ranger District, Willamette National Forest. The fire is estimated to be around 110 acres, approximately 4 miles south of Highway 126 on Aufderheide Scenic Highway, Forest Service Road 19, in the area of Terwilliger Hot Springs. Visitors are advised to avoid the area. Conditions are exceptionally dry causing the fire to grow quickly. “Forest conditions are very receptive to fire starts and growth right now,” said Darren Cross, District Ranger. “As a reminder, all campfires outside designated campgrounds within the Willamette National Forest are banned. Kettle Falls, WA - The Boyds Fire is located 3 miles west of Kettle Falls, WA. The footprint of the fire remains 3065 acres and is currently 43 percent contained. The fire continues to burn in grass, brush and timber. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.Yesterday, crews worked on strengthening containment lines and are making good progress. Mop-up continued along the south side of Nancy Creek and around structures elsewhere on the fire. Burnout operations were initiated on the west side of the fire. Crews burned small areas to eliminate fuels and strengthen lines. Burn progression went well. Crews monitored for hotspots and helicopters dropped water to help cool the burnout areas. When aircraft were able to fly they continued to check fire spread in the Grandma Creek area on the Northern side of the fire. Firefighters continued to monitor and mop up south-eastern corner in the Entiat Valley. The western side of the fire was exposed to East and Northeasterly winds, increasing the activity. Firefighters worked to suppress the Watson Creek Fire on Saturday, addressing the flames at several points with strategic burnouts that met and slowed the fire’s progression toward established fire lines. Helicopters continued to assist with water drops and will be available again today. Last night’s infrared flight over the fire shows it has grown to 16,227 acres. A public meeting will be held tonight at 7:00 p.m. in Paisley at the Community Center.
