Press Release Big Hollow Fire Update September 24, 2020 Fire Information Line: 971-333-8602 For Immediate Release Overview: A Virtual Community Meeting, on the Gifford Pinchot National Forest Facebook page, will begin at 5:00 PM. The latest updates will be discussed by our Incident Commander and Planning Operations Section followed by questions and answers from the public. Current Situation: Over 2-inches of rain fell on the fire area. Minimal fire movement was observed by firefighters. Heavy fuels such as larger logs and stumps continue to burn in place. Crews patrolled and worked on clearing fire debris along roadways and containment lines. Today’s Plan: Firefighters will continue containment efforts along the perimeter of the fire. Southwest winds are expected to reach 5-10 mph with moderate precipitation projected throughout the day. Crews will scout and patrol for potentially hazardous trees or debris along containment lines. To keep firefighters and communities healthy and safe, all firefighters are asked to follow recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to reduce the spread of illness. News Release - September 24, 2020 Inchelium, WA: Rains overnight, where helpful in reducing some hotspots within the fire perimeter, is not enough to completely put out the fire. Hotspots can remain sheltered within dozer berms or deep in stump holes and continue burning, even after raining. Activities: Wildland engines and hand crews made significant progress securing the line on the Kewa Fields fire (Div. U and M). Crews will continue to identify and extinguish hot spots along the fire line to increase containment. Excavators in tandem with hand crews will continue to identify hot spots and repair dozer berms, especially around houses and fences, to ensure that structures are secure. During periodic breaks in the weather, visible smoke may develop as any remaining stumps or roots smoke. Minimal fire behavior is expected for today through Friday. There are many stumps, large logs, and roots still smoldering in the interior of the fire. While these areas may produce visible smoke, they are not threatening the containment of this fire. BRATTAIN FIRE UPDATE September 24, 2020 @ 9 AM Please take a moment to read a joint message from Oregon/Washington BLM Director Barry Bushue and USDA Forest Service Pacific Northwest Regional Forester Glenn Casamassa in An Open Letter to Friends and Neighbors in the Pacific Northwest about Wildfires: https://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/r6/news-events/?cid=FSEPRD809403. Yesterday: Strong southwest winds blew throughout the day with ridgeline winds around 20-30 miles an hour. These windy conditions tested fire lines, but fire behavior remained minimal. Mop up and suppression repair/rehabilitation activities remained a top priority, as did snagging in the northwest corner. Chipper work will continue in a few days. Campgrounds in the fire perimeter received little damage, and outhouses will be unwrapped Thursday. Fire containment increased quite a bit yesterday, bringing the fire to 91% contained.
