Malheur National Forest Fire Staff Work to Plan Fall Prescribed Burning (Fall Prescribed Fire Projects 2020 Prescribed Fire)
John Day, Prairie City and Hines, Ore. – The Malheur National Forest Fire Staff realize that prescribed burning is an essential part of fuels management in the Pacific Northwest. The region is moving forward with lifting the regional prescribed burning pause with some increased coordination requirements. For prescribed burning, the Regional Fire Team is authorizing Forest Supervisors to approve prescribed burns within their respective Forest Service units. Locally, the District Fuels Specialists will be completing risk assessments for broadcast, understory, or jackpot burns and having conversations with District Rangers (Agency Administrators) to ensure that all understand the risks and rewards and are all operating under the same vision. We’ll have increased coordination with the Regional Fuels group, our state partners, and local health officials to address any COVID concerns. ACTION: Temporary Closure of Public Lands SUMMARY: Pursuant to 43 CFR 9268.3(d) and 43 CFR 8364.1, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) hereby provides notice that effective immediately, the public lands described below are closed to all forms of public access. This action is in response to large fires currently active in the area. The BLM is closing public lands in order to reduce conflicts with emergency crews and allow for fire suppression and burned area site recovery. AFFECTED AREA: All BLM-managed public lands, roads, sites, and trails east of Interstate 5 in the following counties: Marion County, Clackamas County and Multnomah County. News Release September 23, 2020 Inchelium, WA NEWIMT Type 3 Team 1 has taken command of the Inchelium Complex (Inchelium Highway, the Fry, and the Kewa Fields fires). Activities: The Inchelium Highway and Fry fires will be placed into patrol status and crews will continue to monitor the perimeter and around structures for any additional hotspots. On the Kewa Fields Fire (Kewa – Meteor area), crews continue to work on the northern section to strengthen the fire line and increase containment. Wildland fire engines and hand crews are gridding along containment lines and around structures for hotspots. Heavy equipment, such as excavators, feller-buncher, graders and skidgens are working on smoothing roads and re-naturalize berms of dirt that dozers created when building fire line. Springfield, Ore. – The Holiday Farm Fire stayed put over the last 24 hours with no additional growth. The fire stands at 173,094 acres and is now 27 percent contained.Elevated winds that are expected to arrive in the area early this afternoon will be the first test of containment lines since last week’s thunderstorms. Ridgetops throughout the fire have already undergone significant drying and will be exposed to sustained winds out of the south-southwest up to 20 mph with gusts up to 40 mph. Firefighters have been spending the majority of their time preparing for today’s weather event by strengthening hand and dozer lines and mopping up at least 25 feet into the interior. Because there are several pockets of unburned vegetation within the perimeter of the fire, residents can expect to see smoke and some torching of trees within the footprint of the fire. Fire Minimal fire behavior is expected. Internal pockets of unburnt fuels and dense understory will continue to smolder until incoming weather brings rain starting this afternoon. Rainfall will prevent any additional smoldering and will keep fire activity at a minium. Smoke Smoke levels will remain elevated within the interior of the fires and around active fire parameters for the remainder of Wednesday. Areas deep within fire parameters, such as Detroit Lake, will remain the most impacted by smoke due to proximity. Rain showers are expected to arrive mid-day and will dampen any remaining smoke. The entire Willamette Valley will see Good air quality. Winds ahead of the incoming low-pressure system will increase mixing and rainfall will scour out any remaining smoke. The Southern Area Red Team, who has been managing the Archie Creek Fire on behalf of the Bureau of Land Management, Douglas Forest Protective Association and Umpqua National Forest, regrets to report the death of Walter (Wally) Samuel Elsbury, Jr., a firefighter assigned to the Archie Creek Fire. Fire personnel found Mr. Elsbury unresponsive in his vehicle at a fire staging area Friday morning, September 18, 2020, before he began his shift as a heavy equipment operator. The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office responded and notified Mr. Elsbury’s family. No foul play is suspected. Mr. Elsbury, of Elsbury Logging Company in Burns/Hines, Oregon, had been working on the Archie Creek Fire for about a week as skidgeon operator.
