July 22 2021 Daily Fire Update (Jack Fire Wildfire)
Safety on Hwy 138: For the safety of firefighters and the public, please follow posted speed limits. Be aware of potential speed limit changes along Hwy. 138 due to increased fire traffic. Fire Information: The fire is currently at 19,643 acres with 55% containment. The fire is burning in timber, primarily the understory and leaf litter, and brush. North of Hwy 138, firefighters continue to successfully keep the fire perimeter within control lines. Mop up and patrolling of fire containment lines will resume. South of Hwy 138, crews along the west flank will be monitoring fire behavior to ensure fire remains within the control lines and will conduct burning operations where necessary. On the southeast and east portion of the fire, crews will work with heavy equipment to prepare control lines for potential burning operations. This lightning sparked fire was reported as a small smoke, white in color, and estimated as a ¼ acre in size on Fuego Mountain by the Spodue Fire Lookout Owen Fabrio-Emanual. The smoke and fire grew rapidly in intensity. Owen stated, “The fire behavior was extreme within five minutes of the first report. The fire had jumped into the crowns and trees began torching within the first 30 minutes.” Owen had reported multiple other fires since he started his lookout duties this June but he could tell that this fire behaved different than others. Bruler Fire Update for Thursday, July 22 (Bruler Fire Wildfire)
Sweet Home, Ore. – Firefighters took advantage of the cool marine layer and moderate temperatures yesterday and started mop up around the entire perimeter of the fire. Indirect primary control line was made more direct and closer to the existing fire line on all sides of the fire. Containment is listed at 12%.Heavy equipment, including masticators, feller bunchers and bulldozers, arrived at the Bruler Fire yesterday. The equipment was used to strengthen direct control line on the north side of the fire, allowing firefighters to place hose and sprinklers. Equipment will be used to create larger fire breaks to reduce the possibility of fire spread beyond primary control lines. Today, firefighters will begin creating a contingency control line on the west and on the south sides of the fire. FIRE INFORMATION:E-mail: 2021.summittrail@firenet.gov Phone: 385-999-1380 INCHELIUM, WASHINGTON – The Summit Trail Fire was ignited by lightning on July 12th approximately 17 miles west of Inchelium. Crews successfully held the western side of the fire yesterday and overnight despite strong winds. It made a hard push northward into the Lynx Creek drainage yesterday, and crews will work to cut off that northern spread today. The fire also continued to spread eastward, and four small spot fires were detected yesterday over proposed lines on Oregon City Ridge. Firefighters successfully picked those spots up and were able to hold the fire along the ridge. The fire continued to back into the Beaver Dam Creek drainage as well, and crews will prioritize scouting and constructing containment lines on the eastern edge to stop any further progression toward Twin Lakes. Goddard Road FireNews Release - July 22th, 2021Rice, WA: Crews focused on the portion of the fire escaped containment lines, strengthening the lines and finalizing the remaining burnout yesterday afternoon. Crews were able to mop-up to about 20 feet into the interior of the escaped fire. Mapping of the escaped fire, including the burnout operations placed it at about 110 acres, bringing the total acreage of the fire to 784 acres. Two secondary structures were confirmed to have burned down during the initial spread of the fire. On the original fire footprint, crews will continue to work on constructing hose lays and engage in reducing hot spots to 25-50 feet into the interior. Crews will work for several days to ensure hot spots are out to 150 feet or where necessary to contain the fire line and 500 feet around structures. Containment on the south, west and central sections of the fire held firm. Firefighters faced challenges on the upper eastern section of the fire where blowing embers caused two small spot fires. Crews jumped on them quickly and held them in check. A section of partially burned fuel midway down the eastern line ignited, but was also controlled with the aid of water drops. Cooler temperatures, paired with decreased wind is expected to give firefighters favorable conditions to continue tying together containment lines. The fire is burning northward with lateral growth upslope to the west and east with low intensity backing downslope towards the Chewuch River. Fire growth has been consistent for several operational periods. Firefighting efforts have benefited in areas where the fire has merged into past burned areas and areas that have received previous fuel treatments. The fire remains split into east and west arms extending outward from approximately the confluence of Boulder Creek and the Chewuch River. Overnight the fire burned actively and was not significantly different from daytime fire behavior as a result of poor relative humidity recovery and low fuel moisture. The following changes in the evacuation levels for Klamath County are for immediate release: Previously Level 1 areas south of Highway 140 from the lake county line extending west, have been removed. Previously Level 2 areas south of the fire perimeter and west of Ivory Pine Rd including the upper tablelands and Oregon Pines areas have been reduced to Level 1 (BE READY) evacuation notice. All other evacuation levels remain in place at this time. Residents returning to fire damaged areas are urged to exercise extreme caution as hazards such as damaged trees remain. Yesterday, a portion of the fire escaped containment lines, expanding to the north towards Pleasant Valley Road, growing to 50-100 acres in size. Aerial support (helicopters, fire bosses, and retardant drops) worked in tandem with dozers and ground crews to stop forward progression of the fire and to construct a fire line. In areas where the lines were indirect, crews conducted burnout operations. Crews will continue to strengthen the line on the escaped potion of the fire. There is a potential for spot fires as crews continue containment and evacuation levels have been adjusted to expand level 3 and level 2 due to the increase in risk. Fire Update for July 21 am (Elbow Creek Wildfire)
Wallowa, OR – The Elbow Creek Fire, 17 miles northwest of Wallowa, is estimated at 18,599 acres and is 20 percent contained. The fire’s increasing complexity and growth has moved it up on the priority scale with other fires in the region. The higher ranking should provide more opportunity to acquire additional resources within the next few days. Six additional crews arrived yesterday evening to support current suppression efforts.Tuesday’s cooler conditions, combined with overnight showers is seen as an opportunity to get ahead of fire activity. Of concern is the Elbow Creek drainage, where the fire spotted from the east side of Elbow Creek over to the west side yesterday afternoon.
