Soil Burn Severity vs Vegetation Mortality (Bootleg Fire Wildfire)

August 19, 2021 - 11:32am
When you or I visit any forest after a wildfire, we are clued in to what we see, which can look pretty dramatic from what we’re accustomed to. Oregon has an average of 347 trees per forested acre, which provides the lush, green view we love. After the Bootleg Fire, that lush, green view has been replaced by brown trees with scorched trunks and needles, or entire hillslopes that are now blackened sticks. So why do the Forest Service’s severity maps show so little high severity? There are a few things to consider. Forest Service Burned Area Emergency Response (BAER) teams come in and the first thing they do is map the soil burn severity. Over the years, scientists have learned that what happened to the soil – not the above ground vegetation – is a critical indicator of recovery. From the soil burn severity map, geologists can predict debris flow hazards, hydrologists can predict changes to stream flows, and soil scientists can predict erosion potential.Clearly, above ground...

August 19 Daily Update (Bull Complex Wildfire)

August 19, 2021 - 9:44am
Bull Complex Fire Update August 19, 2021 Fire Information Line: 503-668-1437 For Immediate Release   Announcement: Virtual community meeting scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Friday August 20, 2021 via Zoom.   Overview: Crews will utilize an Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) or drone, to perform reconnaissance and gather information on the location of the fire and potential anchor points for burn operations. A spike camp will be setup for firefighters near the City of Detroit. A spike camp is a temporary camp that is set up closer to the fire to decrease travel time to and from the fire. This increases productivity and decreases risk of accidents as firefighters travel along mountain roads early in the morning or late in the evening.   Yesterday’s Activities: Clear skies and decreased humidity resulted in moderate fire activity which provided firefighters a great opportunity to gain ground in preparing fire lines. Crews monitored for additional spot fires and continued mop up...

Middlefork Complex Daily Update August 19, 2021 (Middle Fork Complex Wildfire)

August 19, 2021 - 9:37am
Middle Fork Complex Fire Update – Thursday, August 19, 2021 – 9:00 am The limited resources available to the Middle Fork Complex are being utilized where they will be most effective in providing for life-safety and protection of communities; shifting to priority areas as needed. Kwis Fire: The remaining crews and equipment on Kwis continue to mop-up and complete alternate fire lines. Hazard trees that could fall and compromise fire lines by carrying fire into unburned areas are being removed. Crews are expecting similar fire behavior to what occurred yesterday with unburned islands of vegetation naturally consuming well within the fire perimeter and producing smoke, but with no increase to the size of the fire perimeter. Please continue to respect the closure area as there are still hazards in the area, as well as fire personnel and equipment. Gales and Ninemile Fires: The strategy for the Gales and Ninemile fires involves connecting roads and ridgetops to serve as...
