South Valley Fire Daily Update - August 7 (South Valley Fire Wildfire)
Dufur, OR – Current Status: Last night the fire perimeter was patrolled by a strike team of engines. They utilized handheld infra-red cameras to scour the landscape along the perimeter of the fire for any threatening hot spots. Infra–red cameras are used to reveal heat sources buried deep in the ground. Upon discovery, the spots are flagged for the night crews to work on and the next day shift to double check and completely extinguish. This is the pick and shovel work that is necessary to keep the fire from rekindling later this summer. Today, crews will continue mopping-up all smokes within 150 feet of structures located within and adjacent to the fire. Fallers are working to fall all dangerous trees within 300 feet of the fire line for safety and to prevent spotting out-side the fire perimeter. Other crews will be tasked with bringing in excess equipment and hose from the fire line to be returned to the Redmond Fire Cache and made available to other incidents. A heat wave is...

Structure protection continued in the Briggs and Illinois Valleys, and Oak Flat in Josephine County. 8/7/2018 Natchez Fire Update (Natchez Fire Wildfire)
Weather: Continued sunny weather with areas of smoke. Winds will be west-northwest 4 – 8 mph with up to 15 mph on ridgetops. A warming and drying trend is expected through Thursday as high pressure builds over the area. A low pressure system will increase winds on Friday and provide cooler temperatures. Yesterday’s Activities: Firefighters continued to hold, mop up and patrol firelines on the entire north half of the fire. This portion of the fire becomes more secure each day. On the southeastern side of the fire, east of Cole Creek, crews used low intensity hand ignition to widen the blackened buffer zone that is securing the fire from moving east. Aerial ignition was not used due to smoke and limited visibility preventing helicopters from flying most of the day. However, for a portion of the afternoon, helicopters were able to make water drops on the southwestern fire flank as supervisors continued to develop strategies for initiating direct fireline construction. Brush...

The finish line for the Garner Complex is in sight. Today, fire managers placed two additional sections of the fire into patrol status. Currently, well over half of the fire has no active operations, only daily monitoring and patrol. Fire managers expect that they will place the remaining portions of the fire in patrol status at the end today’s shift. The Suppression Repair group continues to make excellent progress and expects to complete repair operations within two to three days. The incident management team’s goal has been to get the fire to a point where it could be safely and confidently handed back to the local ODF district. “History will judge us by what we leave behind,” said Rick Dolan Incident Commander for the Florida Red Team. “There’s a lot of fire season ahead of us. South Valley Fire Daily Update-Aug 6 (South Valley Fire Wildfire)
Current Status: Dufur, OR – As the fire cooled in the southeast portion of the fire, crews were reassigned to work through the night on mopping up hot spots and burning stumps, especially around structures in the north end of the fire. Fire fighters are focused on mopping up 75-150 feet inward from the perimeter of fire. It is estimated that there is approximately 50 miles of fire perimeter. Much of the line is cool, with the heat concentrated north of the Hix and Friend Rd. areas. The fire meteorologist is predicting hotter and windy conditions later this week. The more heat that fire fighters can extinguish now lessens the threat of the fire rekindling in the future. Fire fighters are seeing “dust or ash devils”. This occurs when solar heating hits the ground and the unstable atmosphere creates a whirlwind. This is a concern to fire fighters as the whirlwind can pick up hot burning embers and carry it over the fire line where a new fire could start outside the perimeter....
Taylor Creek Fire Morning Update – Sunday August 6, 2018 (Taylor Creek Fire Wildfire)
Size: 39,804 Acres Containment: 38%Yesterday a strong inversion and heavy layer of smoke brought shade and calm winds that moderated fire activity. Taking advantage of these conditions, crews continued firing operations into the night east of Chrome Ridge Road on the western side of the fire. Firing will strengthen lines and help achieve more containment. Low intensity fire slowly backed downhill towards established lines east of Chrome Ridge Road, south of Bear Camp Road, and south of Galice Creek. Galice Road is closed at mile 13. With assistance from Oregon National Guardsmen, crews mopped up, patrolled, and strengthened contained areas. They will continue this work today. This containment extends from the north side of the fire near Taylor Creek, around the entire east side, and to the southern end past Limpy Creek to the Onion Mountain Road. Crews from the Oregon State Fire Marshal will continue structure protection work near Galice. Some of these crews are being reassigned to...
