Daily Update - August 13, 2018 (Miles Fire Wildfire)
Summary: The area remains in ‘moderate drought’ conditions with 65 days since the last meaningful rainfall. Fuels remain receptive to ignition with the probability of ignition over 80%. There will be a later lift of the smoke inversion today which will moderate fire behavior until humidity levels bottom out in the afternoon. After 3:00 p.m., increased fire activity is anticipated as maximum heating and drying occurs through 8:00 p.m. Southwest Oregon remains open for business and ready to welcome visitors. Please check with local chambers of commerce and businesses as there are many opportunities for recreationalists, including access to Lost Creek Lake through Joseph Stewart State Park. 8/12 Natchez Fire Update (Natchez Fire Wildfire)
Weather: Sunday will be mostly sunny with areas of smoke. West winds of three to six mph will gust up to 10-15 mph, with higher gusts along ridges. Minimum RH will be 24%. Another warming and drying pattern, along with lighter winds, is forecasted for Sunday through Tuesday.Max temps: Lower 90s in the valleys to lower 80s on the ridges.Yesterday’s Activities: Patrol and mop up continued on the north half of the fire. Crews continued to construct direct line and mop up in the unburned island on the northeast side of the fire. Additional containment line was completed on the southeast portion of the fire at the head of Coon Run south towards the South Fork of Indian Creek. Overall fire containment remained at 52%. Weather: Morning SW winds are predicted to switch to N-NW by afternoon, however winds may fluctuate to northeasterly from time to time. 10-15 mph winds are predicted this afternoon with evening gusts of 20-25 mph on the ridges. Humidity today will be 22-30% with overnight recovery rising to 45-50% by the early morning hours. Another warming and drying pattern, along with lighter winds is forecasted for Sunday through Tuesday. Max temps: Upper 80s in the valleys to lower 80s on the ridges. Yesterday’s Activities: Patrol and mop up continued on the north half of the fire. Spotting occurred outside the fire perimeter near Tom Gray Gulch. Contingency crews working along Grayback Road were able to assist in extinguishing the spot fires. Crews worked to keep fire north of the South Fork Indian Creek until rolling debris and hazardous conditions required them to engage the sprinkler system and temporarily leave the area. Summary: Forty one different fire agencies are providing structure protection under the coordination of the Oregon Office of the State Fire Marshal. These firefighters have checked 1018 structures and prepared 398 homes to better withstand wildfire conditions. Those preparations were tested overnight with increased fire activity and no homes were lost. Although fire weather will be slightly moderated today, relative humidity levels remain well below the critical threshold. The fire area has seen minimal moisture since May and is officially in a moderate drought condition. Fuel conditions remain conducive to active fire behavior. When the smoke inversion breaks mid-day, there will be a noticeable increase in fire behavior. Firefighters hear a single, unified message from Agency Representatives. Today temperatures will drop with winds gusting as high as 20 mph out of the north, becoming northeast. Moderate fire weather conditions are expected today. A noticeable smoke column was present Friday afternoon on the Klondike Fire, as the fire became more active. As predicted on Friday, winds out of the southwest and lifted the smoke cap increasing fire activity. This caused the fire to consume fuels between the Klondike Fire and recent days firing operations east southeast of the fire. This strengthened the margin between the Klondike Fire and the communities of Selma, Wonder and Wilderville to the east . Smoke inversions will continue to affect the region. Increased traffic in the Galice area will continue to present safety concerns for firefighting crews along areas roads....

Summary: The word of today is change on area fires. The fire weather will bring in stronger winds today that will expose areas of heat within the fire perimeter and may cause fire lines to be tested. Changing fire weather will elevate fire behavior, keeping firefighters on alert for potential rapidly changing situations on the fires. Community Meeting: Representatives from the Unfied Command Team have hosted two community meetings this week in Tiller and Shady Cove. Approximately 225 residents have attended these meetings. The next meeting will be today, August, 10, at 6:30 p.m. at the Prospect Community Center (305 Red Blanket Road, Prospect). The team will give a current situation update on the Miles Fire and answer questions about fire operations, weather, and smoke impacts. COMMUNITY MEETING: There will be a Hendrix Fire Community Meeting tonight at 7 pm. It will be held at the Hendrix Fire Incident Command Post (Fire Camp) located at the intersection of Highway 238 and Hamilton Road in Ruch, Oregon. This meeting will be followed by a short tour of the fire camp. It will also be streamed on Facebook, https://www.facebook.com/HendrixFire2018/.An approaching cold front will bring slightly drier and cooler air today. Maximum temperatures near the fire will be 76-82 degrees while valley temperatures will top out in the mid-90s. Relative humidity will range from 23-28%. Winds will be light in the morning and then become gusty in the afternoon. These winds should assist in clearing out some residual smoke and slightly improve air quality.
