Fire Summary: Minimal fire growth is expected. Isolated pockets of slow surface spread where the fire is sheltered by the tree canopy and continued burning in the larger dead or down trees is still possible. The southeast side of the fire is under the command of the Naches Ranger District’s Type 4 organization. The northwest side of the fire is under the command of a Type 3 organization with the Incident Command Post located at the Expo Center in Enumclaw. Norse Peak Fire: On the northwest side of the fire, cleanup and fire suppression restoration work continues along Forest Road 70. Miller Complex Fire UpdateSeptember 27, 2017 – 9:00 a.m. Acres: 36,496 Percent Contained: 75% Start Date: August 14, 2017 Cause: Lightning Total Personnel: 193 Location: Private land and federal land on the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest 20 miles west of Ashland, OR. Fire Information: 541-838-0770, Email address: millercomplex2017@gmail.com Over the next few days the Abney Fire will continue to respond to warming and drying trends as a thermal trough moves over the area. Warmer temperatures are drying fuels out, producing additional smoke from the incident. Firefighters are not able to access the steep, rough terrain on the east flank of the fire. Isolated areas continue to burn, funneling smoke down Elliot Creek and West Fork of Dutch Creek. A morning inversion then traps the smoke, not allowing it to rise. This process is occurring between the hours of 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and by midday the ground is heating up enough to cause the smoke to lift out of the inversion...

Smoke: Smoke will remain isolated to areas that still contain heat on various fires. Remaining smoke will flow down drainage at night, and then pool before daytime winds prevail and push the smoke out. Most communities will not see any smoke the next few days, but those that do will experience it worse in the morning hours. Fire: Warmer temperatures are aiding the remaining fire behavior. Most areas that are still active are dead trees, logs, and deep duff layer. Other: An incoming weather system towards this weekend should clear the air-shed of smoke and reduce the remaining active hotspots burning in the interior of the various fires. Smoke should reduce greatly after this weekend and continue to reduce each day afterwards. This will be the last smoke forecast for Southwest Oregon unless condition dramatically change.

Today Along the perimeter and interior of the Chetco Bar Fire, firefighters are continuing to patrol, monitor, and mop-up hotspots and extinguishing remaining heat. Warmer and drier weather today and tomorrow will aid suppression efforts by increasing visibility of hotspots, helping crews to locate and extinguish these smokes. Crews will continue to repair hand and dozer lines, inserting waterbars to minimize erosion potential. In a reconnaissance flight yesterday, the Indigo Fire showed no heat and areas of repair work continue along the indirect lines. Firefighters, equipment, and support personnel continue to be released as incident objectives are achieved. Special Announcements: Limited phone calls and lack of fire activity eliminated the need for an additional fire information line at Crater Lake National Park. As of 0600 today, CLNP fire information can be obtained by calling the main line at 541.238.7164. Fire information boards will be updated every few days as needed. The incident meteorologist expects weather to reach the high 70’s on Thursday, but temperatures will decrease dramatically as a wet cold front moves in this weekend. There is some potential for aggressive creeping on Thursday, but that will be put to rest as cooler temperatures impede the fire’s ability to grow.
