BAER Assessment Presentation Now Available (Chetco Bar Post-Fire BAER Burned Area Emergency Response)
On Thursday, October 12 the Burned Area Emergency Response team presented their assessment findings and recommendations at a public meeting held at the Chetco Community Library in Brookings. Fall Prescribed Fires planned in Bly and Winter Rim Area (2017 SCOFMP Prescribed Burning Prescribed Fire)
BLY, Ore. – Fremont-Winema National Forest will begin prescribed burning October 15 on the Bly, Paisley and Silver Lake Ranger Districts. Prescribed burns are a proactive tool used to achieve a number of purposes, including the reduction of hazardous fuels (overgrown vegetation). They can help decrease the threat of high intensity, high-severity wildfires; reduce the risk of insect and disease outbreak; recycle nutrients that increase soil productivity; and improve wildlife habitat.Area residents and visitors may notice smoke on public lands in various areas during the next few months as part of the continued commitment to protect communities and natural resources from wildfires. The Bly Ranger District of the Fremont-Winema National Forest will begin prescribed fire operations starting the week of October 8, 2017 as weather and air quality conditions permit. West Spodue – 500 acres of prescribed burning planned in this project, located approximately 12 miles north of Beatty, just west of Spodue Mountain. Long – 300 acres of prescribed burning is planned in this project, located 15 miles east of Bly in the Coleman Rim area. Hand crews have finished seeding operations and placement of water bars along Forest Road 060, and chipping operations are complete along Forest Road 240. Funding has been approved for the Type 3 team, in conjunction with the Burned Area Emergency Response team assigned to the incident, to conduct emergency hazard tree removal within the fire perimeter. Forest Road 1376 (North Bank Chetco) has been designated as a priority for this removal, in order to provide for the safety of residents and private logging operations along this road. These operations will commence within the week. Firefighters continue to patrol, mop up, and complete suppression repair operations as needed throughout the perimeter. Weather and Fire Behavior: Rain showers will continue today through early Friday morning. Another round of showers is expected Friday evening....

Cooler temperatures and good visibility allowed firefighters to engage direct on the fire’s northeastern flank and three helicopters were on scene to assist with bucket drops throughout the day. Smokes from these fires may be visible at times as air currents move northwards up the coast.Wetting rain has dampened fire activity throughout the Chetco Bar Fire perimeter. Suppression repair is scheduled for completion today. Hand crews finished seeding operations and placement of water bars yesterday along Forest Road 060, and chipping operations are nearly complete along Forest Road 240. Miller Complex Fire Update October 11, 2017 – 12:00 p.m. Acres: 38,356 Percent Contained: 87% Start Date: August 14, 2017 Cause: Lightning Total Personnel: 186 Location: Private land and federal land on the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest 20 miles west of Ashland, OR. Fire Information: 541-838-0770 Email address: millercomplex2017@gmail.com Crews engaged direct with the active, northeastern flank of the Abney Fire on Tuesday morning. Fire managers were able to take a reconnaissance flight at 10 a.m. to get an overview of fire activity. Strong winds, with gusts up to 25 mph, began in the early afternoon and contributed to a significant increase in active fire behavior. In addition, smoke from fires in northern California blanketed the area and affected available options for direct attack and helicopter bucket drops. Fire managers are using multiple suppression tactics to limit growth along the fire’s eastern and southern edges. This weather system will further reduce the potential for any significant fire activity. The wildfire is listed at 50 percent contained where the majority of containment lines are near communities, infrastructure and along road systems. The uncontained portion of the fire is in steep, inaccessible terrain and fire managers do not anticipate the wildfire will spread in these areas.
