Officials flew the fire yesterday and the only smoke observed was in the Wheeler Creek drainage and a small puff on Mt. Emily. After multiple warm, dry, and windy days over the fire area, this minimal fire activity is good news. The fire continues to slowly back down to the FR240 Road where firefighters are working to extinguish any areas of heat. Specially trained groups of tree fallers continue working on the 1376 Road to clear it of all Burned Area Emergency Response identified hazard trees. By this afternoon, 6 road graders will be working to repair roads within the fire area. Additional suppression repair work was identified yesterday; fire personnel will begin work on the area today. CHEMULT, Ore. – The Fremont-Winema National Forest Chemult Ranger District plans to begin prescribed burning October 17 through November 1, conditions permitting. Approximately 500 acres of prescribed burning is planned for the Chemult Townsite Project area, located adjacent to the town of Chemult on Highway 97 and 400 acres in the Jack Unit area, located 13 miles east of Chemult, near Tea Table Mountain. An additional 700 acres are scheduled to be burned within the Cub Unit area, which is 25 miles southwest of Chemult, near Lookout Butte south of Highway 138. Miller Complex Fire Update October 15, 2017 – 11:00 a.m. Acres: 39,284 Percent Contained: 86% Start Date: August 14, 2017 Cause: Lightning Total Personnel: 275 Location: Private land and federal land on the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest 20 miles west of Ashland, OR. Fire Information: 541-838-0770 Email address: millercomplex2017@gmail.com The northeastern flank of the Abney Fire has continued to exhibit active fire behavior, with moderate flanking, backing, and single tree torching. Crews are utilizing all available options to limit spread and minimize impacts to private property in areas southeast of Elliott Creek Road. The fire has moved towards Forest Service Road 1065 but remains south of it at this time. Fire growth to the south of Dutch Creek has been minimal and remains north of the Pacific Crest Trail. BAER Team Releases Soil Burn Severity for Diamond Creek, Uno Peak, Jack Creek and Jolly Mountain Fires WENATCHEE, WA The Central Washington Burned Area Emergency Response (BAER) team, led by Forest BAER Coordinator Molly Hanson and Greg Kuyumjian, has completed gathering data and field verifications on National Forest lands within the Diamond Creek, Uno Peak, Jack Creek and Jolly Mountain Fires. The team’s soil burn severity maps for National Forest lands are available at https://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/maps/5633 and on the Central Washington BAER website. There are also links just to the right in Related Information box (see note below about KMZ files). The BAER team uses the maps to identify potential immediate threats to human life, health and safety, property, and natural and cultural resources on National Forest System lands. Fire officials will be flying the fire this afternoon to observe how this warm and dry weather has affected fire activity within the perimeter. Firefighters continue to extinguish hotspots along the FR240 Road where the fire is slowly backing down to the road. Tree fallers are working on the 1376 Road to clear it of all hazard trees that were identified in the Burned Area Emergency Response report. There are currently 4 road graders, with 2 additional in route, working to repair roads within the fire area. Fire officials would like to remind the public that road and area closures are in place for everyone’s safety. Please obey all closure orders and signs, as there are many hazards still in the fire area. The Japanese Bomb site remains closed as well. Weather: Clear skies and east winds are...
