There are 656 firefighters and support staff are assigned to the fire. Incident Commander Brian Goff spoke at this morning’s briefing, saying that primary containment lines have been constructed around the entire fire. He said that confidence in those lines’ ability to contain the fire is growing each day. Fire crews are working to improve and secure the remaining 35% of fire line. This process is called mop up and cold trailing. During mop up, logs smoldering near the fire perimeter are doused with water or moved into the interior where they can be safely consumed. Prospect, Oregon – Nineteen fires on the High Cascades Ranger District west of Crater Lake National Park are being managed under the collective name Sugar Pine, which is also the name of one specific fire. Approximately 3,101 acres have burned on all fires combined. The three largest fires are Sugar Pine, Goodview and Round Top. Weather conditions (high temperatures, strong winds and low humidity) influenced the Sugar Pine Fire to burn actively yesterday. It grew by 700 acres to 1706 acres and is 0% contained. The Goodview Fire grew by 297 acres, has burned 1,103 acres and is 0% contained. The Miles Fire, located 2.5 miles west of the Sugar Pine Fire, part of the South Umpqua Complex, also increased significantly with several spot fires ahead of the main fire. Weather & Fire Behavior: Weather conditions continue to be hot and dry with temperatures hovering around 100 degrees with afternoon wind gusts of 10-15 mph. Very low relative humidity recovery combined with hot daytime and warm nighttime temperatures bring another day of critical fire weather. Smoke is expected to remain over the fire area for most of the day with skies clearing in the late afternoon. These conditions can cause extreme fire behavior resulting in active surface spread, tree torching, crown runs and spotting up to half a mile. Yesterday’s Activities: Fire crews continued to prep roads to the north, east and south end of the fire to provide an alternative to the primary control lines. Smoke from a large fire to the west has drifted into the local area. Those with sensitivity concerns should take appropriate precautions. Field information is be- ing gathered and plans are being made for where to place the next set of con- trol lines. Double wide dozer lines are being created today west of the Pickett Rd areas to Shan Creek as part of effort to protect resources and homes. ODF crews along with OSFM structural crews will be in the West Pickett, Pickett, Shan Cr. and Limpy Cr. neighborhoods tonight. Additional structural resources arrived today, thus doubling capacity. Air resources are being used when conditions are favorable, i.e. not too smoky. Weather condition are predicted to be more of the same for tomorrow....
Sugar Pine and Miles Fires Prompt Level 2 Evacuations - Jackson Co. Sheriff (Sugar Pine Fire Wildfire)
TRAIL, Ore. – Fire officials are recommending “Level 2” residential evacuations in the Elk Creek area. Both the Sugar Pine fire and Miles fire are creating a potential threat to homes in the area. As of Friday, July 27, 2018, a Level 2 (BE SET) advisory is in effect for the following addresses: 8800 to 17600 Elk Creek Road; Sugar Pine Road, all addresses; Dodes Creek road, all addresses. Jackson County Sheriff’s Office deputies and search and rescue personnel are making in-person notifications. Citizen Alert notifications will also be made by phone to those in the affected area. While homes on Dodes Creek Road and the upper section of Elk Creek Road are still some distance from the fires, officials are concerned that the evacuation route down Elk Creek Road could become compromised if the Sugar Pine fire encroaches toward the intersection of Sugar Pine Road and Elk Creek Road. Weather & Fire Behavior: For the second day, we remain in critical fire weather conditions across the fire area. Winds are expected to increase as the smoke layer dissipates, which will contribute to the continued low relative humidity. As the smoke decreases, we expect to see fire activity increase across the region. Yesterday, hot and dry conditions allowed fire to progress across a “donut hole” – an interior pocket of unburned fuels along the south edge of the fire – and tie it into the fire’s edge. Containment is now 65%, with acres burned at 3125 acres, and 712 people are working on the fire. Weather conditions allowed the Sugar Pine Fire to burn more actively yesterday. It grew 504 acres and crossed Sugar Pine Creek towards Forest Road 6620. The Goodview Fire had heavy smoke cover and did not grow significantly. The Miles Fire, part of the South Umpqua Complex, increased by 674 acres and is very near the western boundary of the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest. Crews and heavy equipment including dozers, masticators and chippers continue to construct indirect firelines to the east and south of the Sugar Pine (1,014 acres; 3% contained) and Goodview (806 acres; 0% contained) fires.
