Morning update 9/16/20 (Cold Springs Fire Wildfire)
Omak, WA – Crews will continue the mop up and repair the roads and fences that were damaged during initial attack. The northeast portion of the fire that was a high priority for several days is now in patrol status. The footprint of the fire is over 293 square miles with a perimeter of 134 miles. Firefighters are patrolling and looking for any remaining hot spots that could be a threat to the containment lines. Power companies are making progress with the help of firefighters that are clearing hazard trees around their work sites. The Cold Springs Fire started on Sunday evening 9/6/20 and is 188,852 acres with 70% containment. Approximately 78 primary residences and 60 secondary buildings were lost or damaged during initial attack operations. There are approximately 280 firefighters from local agencies and from around the region that are engaged in firefighting operations. Smoke Outlook for 9/16 - 9/17 _ NW Oregon Willamette Valley Special Statement Oregon Department of Environmental Quality has extended the AIR QUALITY ADVISORY for the entire State of Oregon due to hazardous smoke conditions. Fire Fire activity on the Riverside and Beachie Creek fires has slowed significantly, showing small pockets of heat along the fireline where crews are working to get access. Today's cooler temperatures and incoming low pressure will help firefighter efforts. Internal pockets and dense understory will continue to smolder and clean up through the week. Smoke Today, expect to see air quality improve as this low-pressure meanders inland. The stalled low-pressure system has scoured out the lingering smoke in Tillamook, Florence, and Coos Bay. Yesterday: Containment line has been established in the northeastern area of the fire along Hwy 31. Patrols continued work in the northeast and east to reinforce black line and protect property. Dozer work in the southern portion of the fire made significant progress and crews continued structural protection work in these areas. The most significant fire growth occurred on the northwest perimeter as the fire crossed the Chewaucan River in the evening. Additional fire resources were assigned to this area due to fire spread. BLM extends closure of campgrounds and recreation activities in northwestern Oregon - 9/15SUMMARY: The Northwest Oregon District, Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is giving notice that they are: 1. Closing all BLM established campgrounds across the Northwest Oregon District. 2. Implementing temporary use restrictions across the Northwest Oregon District as follows: a. Dispersed camping on BLM managed lands. b. Use of OHVs on BLM managed lands; OHV systems at Shotgun and Nestucca are closed at this time. c. Campfires, including those in metal fire rings, are restricted on BLM managed lands. d. Smoking, except while in non-public buildings, closed vehicles, in boats on the water, or while standing in the water. e. Discharging a firearm except for legal hunting purposes. f. Violating any State of Oregon Department of Forestry Regulated Closure Proclamation in effect during the time of this restriction. Babb-Malden and Manning Fire Update - September 14, 2020 (Babb-Malden/Manning Fires Wildfire)
Babb-Malden Fire Yesterday: Additional resources significantly increased containment efforts as a “surge mobilization” of cooperating agencies focused on extinguishing visible smoke and continuing mop up work around structures. Today: Fire crews will mop up, watch for flare ups, and continue to strengthen control lines in an effort to bring the fire into patrol status. Fire management will return this incident back to the local fire district at 6:00 pm. Evacuation and Closures: Pine City-Malden Road is currently closed to the public from the west side of Pine City to the eastside of Malden. Babb-Malden Fire On September 13: Operations focused on extinguishing visible smoke and continued mop-up work around structures. Unique cooperation between state mobilization, fire defense committee, local fire crews, and state and federal partners, resources significantly increased by the addition of what is called a "surge mobilization." With the assistance of these additional forces, crews focused on the perimeter fire line; however, there is still unburned fuel inside the north end of the fire. Washington state inmate crews will assist with mop-up operations on the Spokane County side of the fire. Evacuation and Closures: Pine City-Malden Road is currently closed from the west side of Pine City to the eastside of Malden to the public. Holiday Farm Fire Update 9/15 (Holiday Farm Fire Wildfire)
Springfield, Ore. –The Urban Search and Rescue Team has completed 431 structural evaluations in the fire area. The team started at the eastern edge of the fire in the community of Rainbow and have been working west down the Highway 126 corridor. The team expects to assess structures in the community of Blue River today. The team has assessed approximately 30 percent of the 1018 structures in the fire area. Structures include commercial buildings, residences and outbuildings.Of the 431 structures evaluated by the team: · 315 have been destroyed or failed (308 destroyed, 7 failed) · 102 no damage reported · 14 damaged To ensure accurate information, Lane County partners are finalizing a process on how to release the damage assessments and share more detailed information with property owners. Northwest Incident Management Team 6 will be transferring management of the Pearl Hill Fire to a Type 3 team led by Incident Commander David Nalle on Wednesday morning. The Apple Acres Fire will transition to a local Type 4 organization consisting of DNR, USFS, and BLM personnel. The incoming firefighters will be shadowing the outgoing team members today for a seamless transition tomorrow. Firefighters from both fires will be based at Chelan High School. As the fires near full containment, and even after full containment is achieved, interior pockets of fuel may continue to burn. As conditions change, smoke may become more visible at times. Smoke observed within the fire area is to be expected and will be no cause for alarm. Firefighters are working to mop up all hot spots near structures and inside the fire area within at least 100 feet of the outer edges of the fire. Fire Summary:As of 9 a.m. today all evacuation are lifted. Access to highway 422 North will be open at noon. Highway 62 and highway 422 remain closed to the public. Only residence of these areas will be allowed access. They must show proof of residency to enter. The area will remain closed to non-residents. Efforts are being made to reopen highway 62 and highway 422 north. Please check www.trickcheck.com for the latest updates. Containing the fire requires diligent, labor intensive work. Working within the fires interior, crews will search for hot spots. These hot spots can be found in downed logs and tree stumps. Firefighters turn logs over and dig out stumps then spray them with water until the material is cold to the touch. Crews will work 25’ into the fire’s interior, building a crust around the fire to secure the perimeter. Safety remains our top priority. This includes trying to prevent COVID-19 infections.
