Big Hollow Fire Update - September 20 (Big Hollow Fire Wildfire)

The Big Hollow Fire is 15 miles northwest of Carson and 7 miles southeast of Cougar, Washington. Temperatures today will be mainly in the 60s with relative humidity 50-60 percent, with widespread fog likely through the morning. Northwest Team 12 will be transitioning off the Big Hollow Fire at 6 PM Monday night, to be replaced by two Type 3 teams, one on the east side and one on the west side of the fire. Yesterday’s Operations: Patrols continued along FS 57 and FS 58 Roads. Fire crews monitored the fire on the ridge west of Wind River Hwy and in the Wind River drainage. The FS 31 road system and the road to Government Mineral Springs were prepped. Firefighters monitored around the cabins at Government Mineral Springs and worked on improving hose lays around the structures already protected with sprinklers. Special Statement The AIR QUALITY ADVISORY for non-coastal areas of the State issued by the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality remains in effect. Fire Fire activity on the Riverside, Beachie Creek, Lionshead, and Holiday Farm fires has slowed significantly. Internal smoldering of large stumps and deep roots is keeping smoke levels high within and around the fire parameter. Internal pockets and dense understory will continue to smolder throughout the coming week. Smoke The entire Willamette Valley will see ongoing relief from last week’s heavy smoke event. Periods of light smoke can be expected throughout the day. Areas near the fire will see smoke ranging from Moderate to Very Unhealthy until the morning inversion lifts. The newly installed monitor at Detroit Lake will see heavy impacts in the morning, with smoke improving throughout the day. Non-fire pollutant sources can impact areas of Springfield and Portland early in the day....

Additional firefighters and engines join Beachie Creek fire Air resources flying again                                                                                                                Salem, Ore. – Five additional engines, another hot shot squad and crews from Canada join firefighting efforts Sunday on the Beachie Creek fire. These new resources will work to secure the southernmost edge of the fire. On the western fire perimeter, all crews remain hard at work and are making excellent progress securing lines to protect communities there. Two fires currently burning in a mix of timber and brush on the Colville Indian Reservation and one in patrol status comprise the Inchelium Complex: Inchelium Highway Fire, Kewa Fields Fire, and Fry Fire. All three fires are being managed for full suppression. Crews remain focused on securing exterior lines with an emphasis on mopping up around structures, and the ongoing protection of natural and cultural resources.All Level 2 Evacuations around the Inchelium Complex fires were reduced to Level 1 Evacuations effective 6PM Saturday, Sept. 19, 2020.Current Situation: Showers have passed and were mostly hit and miss. BRATTAIN FIRE UPDATE September 19, 2020 @ 9 AM Yesterday: After five consecutive days of Red Flag conditions, a frontal passage brought erratic winds, but cooler temperatures and increased humidity. No precipitation was received but crews were able to stop the forward progression of the fire in the northwest and southeast corners last night. This was accomplished with the support of eight helicopters, Crews finished mopping up along the northeast quadrant of the fire; all resources were moved to other priority areas. Crews and heavy equipment continued to widen and strengthen lines and conduct hoselay operations in the south and suppress a few hot spot fires near Clover Flat Road. A local timber company constructed a contingency line tying into the Ben Young burn scar. Thanks to the improved visibility, Lionshead Fire Aircraft was able to do some flying for the first time in several days.  Operations got to look at some portions of the fire that they had not seen for a bit. Air Attack was up early and several helicopters were able to accomplish some much-needed bucket work. Great news for fire fighters!

Springfield, Ore. –Infrared flight mapping was unavailable again last night. The Holiday Farm Fire’s footprint is currently estimated at 173,025 acres and containment is at 12%. The fire’s perimeter measures more than 260 miles. Weather-Yesterday we had approximately 1/10” rain on the eastern portion of the fire and 1.5” on the western portion. Today we expect things to stay wet through noon with 70-80% humidity across the fire. Temperatures are expected to remain in the 50’s and 60’s today.  Wildland fire crews worked to “mop up” (the process of ensuring that no burning material remains) in several areas around the fire perimeter yesterday, strengthening containment lines. Today crews will focus on the eastern portion of the fire where more heat is present due to lower rainfall amounts. Status of area around Drakes Crossing which Fire Operations identifies as near the intersection of Powers Creek Loop and Bridge Creek Rd. Operations reports that the line around the tip of that finger of the fire is in good condition and while not officially contained at this point, the line is currently not threatened. PNW Incident Management Team #12 will be holding a virtual community meeting on the Gifford Pinchot Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/GiffordPinchot/videos/ on Sunday, September 19 at 5:00 PM. The team will be giving an update to the current situation of the fire, as well as the current and predicted weather, fire behavior, and the leader’s intent from the incident commanders. Questions can be left on this post as well as during the virtual meeting, and staff will try to answer them to the best of our ability at the end of the presentations. The video will be saved and able to be viewed and shared for those that can’t attend during the live broadcast.
