Inciweb Articles OR - August 4, 2021 - 10:41am
GLIDE, Ore. – Newer fires on the North Umpqua Ranger District are requiring more of firefighters’ attention this week than the month-old Jack Fire, officials said Tuesday. The Chilcoot II Fire, which was identified Monday after storms moved through the area Sunday evening, has been staffed around the clock since to protect a vital communications tower. Heavy equipment has cut line on both flanks while crews build and reinforce handlines on.  “We want to fight fire aggressively, but we also want to be patient and deliberate,” said Incident Commander Brian Gales, of Northwest Team 13, which is overseeing the Jack Fire, Rough Patch Complex and initial attack for new starts in the area. “It’s important to think strategically, picking the priority fires and focusing on them.”  Today, fire managers are reassessing contingency lines along the southern boundary of the Jack Fire and looking for ways to box in new starts outside the existing fire boundaries.  “We’re...

Summit Trail Fire Morning Update, August 4 (Summit Trail Wildfire)

InciWeb Articles WA - August 4, 2021 - 10:34am
Inchelium, Wa. – Yesterday was an active day on the Summit Trail Fire. Clearing skies on Tuesday allowed air tankers and helicopters to drop water on the west flank and retardant along the southeast flank to slow fire spread. Firefighters also conducted firing operations to remove unburned fuel between the active fire front and indirect fire line to create containment line and minimize growth.   Last night’s storms resulted in at least four new fire starts outside of the Summit Trail perimeter, with several more across the Colville Reservation.  The largest of these new fires, estimated to be between 1,000- 2,000 acres, is the Whitmore Fire east of Goose Lake. Also in the vicinity of Columbia River Rd. is the Hamilton Fire, which is about 200 acres. Multiple engines and crews are supporting Mt. Tolman Fire Center as they respond to these emerging fires.   Overnight rain varied between 0.1” and 0.2”; however, there was not enough rain in many areas to penetrate beyond tree...

How to Start Hunting on DNR Land

WA DNR News - August 3, 2021 - 4:22pm

As the weather begins to cool, and summer shifts into fall, many hunters are trading in their summer hiking gear for warmer hunting garb. The hunting preparation season is just beginning. Ammo will be dusted off. Tags will be purchased. Crossbows will be restrung. Avid hunters will begin to seek out their favorite stomping grounds or research new ones. For those in search of new sites, look no further than the Department of Natural Resources (DNR). With more than 3 million acres of state trust lands, DNR offers a range of ecosystems in which to hunt. But before you start hunting on DNR land, here are some basics you need to know.

1) Find The Perfect Hunting Spot

Looking for hunting spots near you? DNR manages millions of acres that are open to hunting. But remember, the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) regulates hunting. To learn more about accessible hunting grounds close to you, visit WDOFW’s hunting page. On this page, you’ll find downloadable maps, hunting areas, and site suggestions.

2)  Don’t Forget Your Discover Pass

Anyone who used state-managed public lands by car must have Discover Pass. This pass enables users to enjoy state parks, water-access points, heritage sites, wildlife and natural areas, trails and more. Recreationists can buy a one-time day pass, or an annual pass. Discover passes are available for purchase at select State Parks, online, or at various local retailers.

3)  Know Before You Go – Rules and Regulations

Whether you’re hunting bear, elk, ducks, or any other creature, you’ll find all the rules and regulations on the WDOFW’s licensing page. Each animal has different tag requirements, and depending on what weapon you use, the rules are subject to change. You always need a license to hunt, so be sure to do your research and to purchase the correct kind. Game wardens frequently patrol DNR properties and will ask to see your license on site.

4) Clean Up Your Casings

So, you just shot your first elk of the season and are ready to take it home. Before you leave the site, make sure to pick up your bullet casings and pack out whatever trash you may have brought in with you. Shell casings pollute the environment, and depending on the type of bullet, can even leak heavy metals into groundwater. Let’s keep our environment clean and safe for everyone.

5) Stay Warm and Stay Seen: Dressing for Success in the Woods

Although as a hunter you want to stay camouflaged from whatever you’re hunting, it’s more important to be seen by fellow hunters. Depending on the season, the weapon you use, and the prey you plan to hunt, Washington State requires that hunters wear a minimum of 400 square inches of bright orange clothing.

This rule keeps hunters safe and seen when walking through highly trafficked sporting areas. Hunting can also be a stationary activity if you’re lying in wait. That’s why it’s essential to bring layers and warm gear. A warm coat or pair of gloves can be the difference between a great hunt or a cold and miserable one.

Do You Need Special Access?

In cooperation with WDFW, DNR runs a program that allows hunters with disabilities to access areas that may be located behind gates. Learn more here.

Now that you understand the basics, you’re ready to hunt on DNR land. Follow our social media accounts and newsletter to learn more about recreation on DNR-managed lands.

“Dry” thunderstorms forecast for Cub Creek 2, Cedar Creek fire areas (Cub Creek 2 Fire Wildfire)

InciWeb Articles WA - August 3, 2021 - 1:53pm
“Dry” thunderstorms forecast for Cub Creek 2, Cedar Creek fire areas A weak low pressure system near the coast is creating conditions that are ripe for the development of thunderstorms in the Winthrop and Twisp areas. Jack Messick, incident meteorologist for the Cub Creek 2, has been watching regional and local patterns and said any thunderstorm over the fire areas could cause issues. “Dry thunderstorms usually have really gusty winds; we’re looking at up to 45 mph.,” he said. “They have an updraft of air on one side and a down draft on the other. The down draft hits the ground and has to go somewhere so it spreads out in every direction. These winds can be enhanced by ridges and valleys that channel the direction and flow.” Firefighters on the Cub Creek 2 Fire have been working to strengthen containment lines but a significant wind event certainly would test them. Messick said even though it’s referred to as a dry thunderstorm, that doesn’t mean there will be...
