USGS Debris Flow Hazard Mapping Completed (Twentyfive Mile BAER Burned Area Emergency Response)

October 1, 2021 - 1:58pm
The Twentyfive Mile Fire Burned Area Emergency Response (BAER) Team coordinated with the US Geological Survey (USGS) during its evaluation of the burned area to assess potential post-fire hazards, including debris flows. The USGS utilized the BAER team’s burn severity map to model potential debris flow hazards within the burned area. The resulting Debris Flow Hazard Map displays the combined relative debris flow hazard for areas burned by the Twentyfive Mile Fire. The combined relative hazard metric is a combination of the likelihood of debris flow (in %) and potential volume of debris flow (in m3). Probabilities are calculated based on a typical storm for this area, which are defined by both their intensity and volume. On the Okanogan-Wenatchee NF, in any given year, there’s a 20% probability of a 15 min intensity / 40 mm per hour storm occurring during a one-hour rainstorm. That means that over a 15-minute period, we could expect to receive 10 mm (~0.40 inches) of rain. Because...

Updated Burn Severity and Runoff Potential Maps (Twentyfive Mile BAER Burned Area Emergency Response)

September 27, 2021 - 7:50pm
Due to persistent cloud and smoke cover, repeated satellite image overpasses were not available to help map the burn severity of the 22,065-acre Twentyfive Mile Fire. Instead, the BAER team made ground observations and hand-drew gross polygons representing general areas of homogeneous severity. These observations were made from safely visited locations. Once the team completed that effort, they began follow-on analysis such as runoff potential mapping. Days after both were completed, the skies finally cleared enough to capture a clear satellite image of the burned area on September 24. Inspection of the satellite image analysis over the weekend largely confirmed what the BAER team was observing in their manual mapping process. However, with the new analysis that covers the entire fire, the BAER team decided to use the satellite-based analysis rather than exclusively using their hand-drawn polygons that offer less precision and best estimates in areas they couldn’t observe in person....

Schneider Springs Fire Update for September 27, 2021 (Schneider Springs Wildfire)

September 27, 2021 - 10:20am
Yesterday and Overnight: Although slightly cooler than Saturday, Sunday’s warm temperatures and gusty winds out of the west promoted active fire behavior on the northwest corner and through the unburned fuels around Devil’s Table. Still, firefighters increased the fire’s containment percentage and successfully protected structures. There was some increase in acreage in the wilderness on the fire’s western flank. Firefighters in the communities around Bumping Lake continued with structure protection, mop-up and hazard tree mitigation along the roadway while work is on-going to repair the damage from a dozer line behind Goose Prairie.  Around the clusters of cabins along SR 410, where the fire over American Ridge is closest, crews continued to maintain structure protection measures. Between Edgar Rock and American Ridge, crews added to existing containment lines. Around Cliffdell, firefighters conducted another day of extensive mop-up to strengthen the increased containment...

Schneider Springs Fire Update for September 26, 2021 (Schneider Springs Wildfire)

September 26, 2021 - 8:43am
Yesterday and Overnight: Saturday’s warm and dry weather presented firefighters the opportunity to make considerable progress toward containment of the fire on the northern edge. Fire crews also conducted suppression repair, road restoration and equipment retrieval across the areas where containment is already secured inside the fire’s perimeter, and around its eastern and southern edges. Some fire growth persisted as it filled in unburned fingers in the wilderness’s rugged terrain on the west flank. Fire crews continued to restore the dozer line to the northwest of Goose Prairie and structure protection measures remained in place around Bumping River Road’s communities as well as at American Ridge Ski Lodge. The fire has worked its way northwest down American Ridge and is holding at the river. Structure protection efforts have been effective across the fire; yesterday, crews activated sprinklers around cabins along the banks of the American River as an extra measure. Good...

Schneider Springs Fire Update for September 25, 2021 (Schneider Springs Wildfire)

September 25, 2021 - 8:34am
Yesterday and Overnight: Continued warm and dry weather contributed to more active fire behavior. Operations managers used the favorable weather conditions to complete additional burn operations. These conditions also helped crews with on-going efforts to reinforce control lines and further increase the percentage of the fire’s containment. In the wilderness areas of the fire’s west side, there was some growth as remaining islands of fuels between burned areas were consumed. Around the communities along Bumping Lake Road, at American Ridge Ski Lodge and along the SR 410 corridor, crews continued to evaluate and reinforce structure protection measures in case they are needed.  Good progress was made improving containment lines between Bumping River Road and Swamp Creek. Around Cliffdell, firefighters added hose lays to further strengthen structure protection. Along the eastern and southern edges where the fire is completely contained, crews patrolled the fire perimeter and...
