Middle Fork Complex update for Saturday, Aug. 28 (Middle Fork Complex Wildfire)
WESTFIR, Ore. – Warmer weather and low humidities will test fire lines and challenge firefighters this weekend. For the past ten days, the fire has stayed on the ground and burned at relatively low intensities, according to Northwest Incident Management Team 13 Fire Behavior Analyst Dean Warner, but the change in weather will likely cause extreme fire behavior later today and tomorrow. Lichen have become extremely dry and higher flame lengths could ignite them, carrying fire into the forest canopy. There is also potential for column development, torching and spotting across fire lines. Line construction is progressing steadily around the Gales Fire footprint, especially along the western edge. Crews and heavy equipment are still building contingency and alternate lines around the northeast edge of the fire and laying hose in preparation for strategic ignitions. A total of five helicopters supported on-the-ground efforts Friday by cooling fire edges...

Firefighters are putting their main focus on the southern edge of the fire, where the fire is closest to communities. Managers are in close coordination with Marion Country...

Smoke outlook for Friday, Aug. 27 (Middle Fork Complex Wildfire)
Fire and Weather The Middle Fork Complex is now at 16,950 acres and is 10% contained. The Fire Weather Forecast predicts sunshine again today and overall similar conditions as seen yesterday, except for more northerly transport winds. Winds near the surface will be terrain driven. The inversion is expected to lift by noon. Fire activity is expected to be similar to what was observed yesterday. Fuels are critically dry, and fire will be active, especially where fuels have been preheated, and where winds and slope align. Burning operations are planned again for today, and will add to whatever smoke is generated by fire activity in general. Smoke The Incident Meteorologist predicts the inversion layer will begin to lift by noon today, but smoke won’t lift out of lower lying areas until mid/late afternoon. Transport winds will be from the northwest, carrying smoke across the Cascades toward La Pine and points south. Smoke from the Bull Complex may reach as far southwest as...
