Big Meadow Fire Update for September 19, 2021 (Big Meadow Fire Wildfire)

September 19, 2021 - 10:14am
Burns, OR – Northwest Incident Management Team 7 will transfer command of the Big Meadow Fire to a Type 4 organization managed by Incident Commander Darren Gunn today at 7:00 p.m. Cooperation between local agencies will continue towards reaching full containment of the fire. This will be Team 7’s last update. All future updates will be provided on the Burns Interagency Fire Zone Facebook page.     Yesterday, firefighters continued work on gridding and mop up. With the cold front that moved through the area, about a quarter inch of rain fell over the fire. Crews were able to mop up and grid until the rain made the roads too muddy to travel on.  On the southern flank, crews worked on mop up and used a chipper to chip and disperse fuels to clean up vegetation along the fireline.    Today the northern flank near Upper Valley will be in patrol status with one engine. On the eastern flank near Egypt Canyon, firefighters will continue work on mop up and backhauling hose...

Cougar Peak Fire Update September 19, 2021 (Cougar Peak Fire Wildfire)

September 19, 2021 - 9:39am
Cougar Peak Fire Update Northwest Incident Management Team 8, Incident Commander Kevin Stock September 19, 2021   Lakeview Ore. – The weather event predicted for the past several days moved over the fire yesterday. Up to one-third of an inch of rain fell on the fire, dampening exposed fuels and reducing fire intensity. However, it was not enough moisture to keep the fire from continuing to burn. In the afternoon, the southwest corner of the fire had a spot fire that firefighters stopped at one-tenth of an acre. Large drought-stricken trees and fuels under thick canopies continued to feed the fires through the afternoon.   As the rain subsided in the afternoon, crews were cautious of working in the heavily timbered areas, as fire and drought weakened trees fell across the fire lines and roadways.   Mop-up on the eastern side of the fire continued all day. Crews continued progress on containment line work. From the south end up the east side of the fire around to the north end,...

Smoke Outlook for Saturday, Sept 19 (Middle Fork Complex Wildfire)

September 19, 2021 - 7:57am
Fire and WeatherExpect scattered rain showers continuing through today, tapering off by Sunday evening. A warming/drying trend begins Monday, but another cold front Is expected to move in by Wednesday/Thursday. Not much precipitation expected with the next system. Fire behavior will be limited to isolated pockets of heat and heavy fuels smoldering with no movement or perimeter growth expected today.SmokeAlthough fire activity will be minimal, heavy, critically dry fuels will continue to smolder and consume, and smoke will continue to be generated. To what degree air quality is impacted will depend on location where smoke is generated, how much smoke is generated, and where wind takes it. Widely scattered small pockets of heavy fuels smoldering shouldn’t result in large amounts of smoke accumulation as would be expected if a few fairly large pockets of heavy fuels were to be smoldering in one drainage. For today and tomorrow, smoke shouldn’t be much of an issue, but that will...

Firefighters removed vegetation near the structure-wrapped historic lookout. Firefighters will monitor the area near the lookout for hotspots over the next few days as conditions allow.“We continue to evaluate the values at risk based on established management action points and respond with the appropriate action for the situation,” said Incident Commander Trainee Eric Riener. “We act decisively within a clear decision framework to ensure firefighter and public safety while protecting important historical structures and natural resources.”  Rainy and cooler weather will allow the firefighters to add to the indirect and direct containment lines where safety allows. Big Meadow Fire Daly Update September 18, 2021 (Big Meadow Fire Wildfire)

Gridding is when firefighters walk together in a grid, searching for any hot spots on the landscape. On the northern flank, firefighters were able to mop up 100 feet into the interior of the fire. There was a small area of active burning in the interior in the southeast corner, which firefighters suppressed with the aid of helicopter water drops. On the southern flank, crews worked on mopping up where recent burn operations occurred.      Today on the northern flank near Upper Valley, firefighters will work on patrolling the fire where 12 miles of line mop up has been completed. On the eastern flank near Egypt Canyon, firefighters will work on mop up and will begin backhauling hose that is no longer needed. On the southern flank near Dry Mountain,...

Smoke Outlook for Saturday, Sept. 18 (Middle Fork Complex Wildfire)

September 18, 2021 - 9:46am
Smoke Outlook 9/18 -9/19Middle Fork Complex Fire Fire and Weather Rain will fall across the fire and outlook area today and into this evening. Estimates are for 1-1.5 inches of precipitation. While this will put a damper on fire activity, heavy fuels are still critically dry. Fine fuels won’t stand a chance, but heavy fuels will hold heat. Fire activity will be limited to smoldering until things begin to dry out again next week.  Smoke If you’ve been camping you know it takes more than just throwing water to put out your campfire. What you get is smoke, and the larger logs will keep burning, albeit not flaming, but smoldering. That’s what we can expect as we get rain across the fire area. Expect smoke to accumulate in low lying areas and areas sheltered from wind. Fires located further south (California) may not receive as much precipitation, and smoke from them may be carried north/northeast into the Outlook Area.
