Firefighters continued to patrol and mop up throughout the fire perimeter. Where containment lines are secured, firefighters also completed suppression repair (such as constructing water bars to help reduce erosion potential and mastication to improve roadways used for containment lines) based on identified rehabilitation needs. Crews also worked on removing hazard trees along the roads. Today firefighters will continue to patrol and monitor fire behavior, particularly on the southern edge of the fire that has uncontained fireline within the Wenaha-Tucannon Wilderness. Bull Complex Update for Wednesday, September 22, 2021 (Bull Complex Wildfire)

September 22, 2021 - 8:54am
RIPPLEBROOK, Ore. – Smoke may be visible from the fire area as warmer temperatures dry out vegetation.  “There are green islands within the established fire perimeter with abundant dry fuels” said Fire Behavior Analyst Dean Warner.  As the island’s vegetation dries out and burns, smoke will continue to be seen from the local area. Crews continue to complete lines on the west flank of the fire.  Mop up of hot spots will continue throughout the perimeter.  Hot spots are pockets of smoldering logs and stumps that are identified by smoke.  Fire managers also identify areas of heat signatures by flying over the fire and mapping hotspots with infrared cameras.  Despite receiving 3 inches of rain within the fire area, the infrared mapping shows hotspots are continuing to consume dry fuels within the fire boundary. Weather: Today will be cooler, with highs in the upper 60s, after a cold front moved through the area last night. Clouds will give way to sun this afternoon. Winds...

Cougar Peak Fire Update September 21,2021 (Cougar Peak Fire Wildfire)

September 21, 2021 - 10:30am
Cougar Peak Fire Update Northwest Incident Management Team 8, Incident Commander Kevin Stock September 21, 2021   Northwest Incident Management Team 12, led by Incident Commander Jeff Dimke will be shadowing NWIMT 8 to learn about the Cougar Peak Fire before taking command on Thursday morning.   Lakeview Ore. – The precipitation from past days and cooler weather have helped firefighters make great strides toward containment of the Cougar Peak Fire. Resources continue to mop-up as large fuels across the fire area continue to smolder and put-up smoke. Suppression repairs to dozer line berms and backhaul of equipment has started in contained areas across the fire. Yesterday, crews worked to finish line construction on the south-western side and continued mop-up. Along the western edge fire, managers continue to assess options for line and mop-up along the 3910 road. There is still a fair amount of heat in the area and as the humidity continues to drop, and temperatures rise,...

Smoke Outlook for Tuesday, September 21 (Middle Fork Complex Wildfire)

September 21, 2021 - 9:38am
Fire and WeatherHigh pressure aloft will build into northern OR and WA bringing NE to E winds. Closer to the surface, a thermal trough will develop to the south bringing SE-E winds. These systems will bring warmer and drier weather to the area. A weak front will move through on Wednesday but will only provide some relief in the form of lower temperatures and a bit higher humidity. Winds out of the east are possible Thursday, switching to the SW on Friday. Fire activity will increase as fuels continue to dry. Fuels exposed to sunlight and wind will dry faster. In the meantime, larger fuels will continue to smolder and burn, and will help dry light fuels that are within close proximity.SmokeToday an increase in hot spot activity can be expected, generating smoke that will likely find its way down slope and down canyon overnight. McKenzie Bridge may see smoke pushed into the McKenzie River Valley as SE winds make their way across the fire area. Today, SW winds at upper elevations can be...

Bull Complex Update for Tuesday, September 21, 2021 (Bull Complex Wildfire)

September 21, 2021 - 8:57am
RIPPLEBROOK, Ore. – Fire managers continue to focus on completing control lines in order to minimize the fire footprint.   Recent infrared flights indicate areas of heat still existing within the fire perimeter. With the warmer, drier weather this week fuels could dry out enough to see some fire growth.  Where fire continues on the landscape containment lines are being established and improved. In areas where fire behavior has moderated, firefighters will begin suppression repair operations. Suppression repair focuses on stabilizing and protecting the burned area.  Repair measures on steep slopes have been prioritized to reduce erosion.  The creation of water bars, which channel and slow water into unburned green areas, will reduce the probability of future erosion.  This work includes loosening soils compacted by heavy equipment to increase absorption of precipitation.  Redistributing berms of soil and vegetative material created by securing fire line with heavy equipment...

Smoke Outlook – 9/21- 9/22 (Rough Patch Wildfire)

September 21, 2021 - 7:51am
Fire and Weather:The Rough Patch Fire is 50,290 acres and the Devil's Knob is 69,871 acres. The fires are 41% and 49% contained respectively. Warmer and faster winds today will continue to dry dead forest wood and debris, however, there remains quite a bit of moisture in the surface soils which will contribute to muted fire activity today and tomorrow. Smoke: The small, isolated hot spots within the containment area may become more active today, however should not produce very much smoke. Southeast and later Southwest winds will blow residual smoke from the fires to the northeast. Expect to see haze in the sky above the fire areas. Oregon from I-5 east to Hwy. 97 should experience Good air quality. Tomorrow morning southern Oregon may have  moderate air quality because of smoke from fires in central California, but the air should clear by noon as winds carry smoke to the
