Smoke Outlook 8/13-8/14/2022 (Big Swamp Wildfire)

August 13, 2022 - 9:58am
Smoke Outlook 8/13-8/14/2022Current Smoke Outlook for Central Oregon (airfire.org) FireThe Windigo Fire is 1007 acres with 40% containment. The Potter Fire grew by 26 acres and is now 371 acres with 0% containment. The Big Swamp Fire remains at 119 acres with 0% containment. No change in fire behavior is expected today. For additional information, see Windigo Fire, Potter Fire, and Big Swamp Fire. SmokeSmoke production was a little less yesterday and it dispersed more readily. However, the Cedar Creek is generating some smoke already this morning, but for the most part should drift NW this morning and then back east to southeast into the Deschutes River basin late this afternoon and evening. If smoke production is similar to yesterday then air quality (AQ) should only just barely reach Moderate levels for a few hours in the Deschutes River basin. The California smoke has been shunted eastward away from the southern portion of the Outlook area due to a more southwesterly flow aloft....

Cedar Creek Fire Update, August 13, 8:00 a.m. (Cedar Creek Fire Wildfire)

August 13, 2022 - 8:49am
Cedar Creek Fire, August 13, 2022Acres: 4,136Contained: 0% Highlights: Firefighters have nearly completed the prep work along Forest Road (FR) 2417 north of the fire perimeter and Black Creek Road (FR 2421) south of the fire. This has included using heavy equipment like masticators as well as crews removing brush and piling small diameter woody material to be chipped. Interagency Hotshot Crews have been scouting for opportunities to construct a containment line to connect these two roads to Waldo Lake as the primary containment feature of this fire on the eastern flank. The crews have determined that connecting fireline to Waldo Lake from Black Creek Road was not a safe or effective option. Fire managers have adjusted their strategy and increased the temporary area closure around the Cedar Creek Fire to provide for the safety of the public and firefighters while also offering crews more flexibility to pursue other options to contain the southern perimeter of the fire. Operations:...

Cedar Creek Fire Update, August 12, 8:00 a.m. (Cedar Creek Fire Wildfire)

August 12, 2022 - 8:17am
Cedar Creek Fire Update, August 12, 8:00 a.m.Acreage: 3,948Containment: 0%Highlights: There was minimal fire activity yesterday with moderate temperatures and humidity values nearing 50 percent. Firefighters continued work on an indirect containment strategy that was developed after crews tried unsuccessfully to engage the fire directly in steep and rugged terrain. Fire managers adjusted fire suppression tactics to minimize the risk to firefighters by using road systems around the fire as containment features that could be more safely accessed by crews working to hold and secure the perimeter. Crews continued to prep Forest Road 2417 north of the fire down to its intersection with Black Creek Road, and Interagency Hotshot Crews have scouted potential paths to connect both roads to Waldo Lake as a containment feature on the east flank. Firefighters have also been working on a contingency fireline and shaded fuel break from Forest Road 19 down to Highway 58. While firefighters do not...

August 11, 2022 - 12:56pm
Smoke Outlook 8/11-8/12/2022FireThe Windigo Fire has been remapped at 1008 acres with 25% containment. The Potter Fire is at 314 acres with 0% containment. The Big Swamp Fire is 119 acres with 0% containment. Similar fire behavior to yesterday is expected today. For additional information, see Potter Fire and Windigo Fire.SmokeVery little smoke was generated yesterday between all of the fires within the Smoke Outlook area. What little there was, drifted mainly into the Deschutes River valley from about Sunriver northward to Redmond resulting in some Moderate air quality (AQ) this morning. However, overall Good AQ is forecast for these areas as well as elsewhere today based on expected minimal fire behavior. As mentioned yesterday there was concern for California smoke to move over the region today. That did happen and surprisingly it was low enough in the atmosphere to create Moderate AQ at Crater Lake, Diamond Lake, and Crescent Lake this morning. The smoke will dissipate this...
