Media contact: Kyle Sullivan  (541) 618-2340  Rogue River and Rogue River Trail Closed Due to Rum Creek Fire  Medford, Oregon – As a result of the Rum Creek Fire, the BLM is closing and not permitting use of the Wild and Scenic Lower Rogue River and Rogue River Trail from Grave Creek to Russian Creek until further notice. This order is for the safety of the public and firefighter personnel and covers all BLM-managed public lands 1/2 mile north and south of the Rogue River.  Boaters will not be permitted to float between Grave Creek and Russian Creek until the closure is lifted. Members of the public may not enter closed areas, and all uses—including hiking, boating, hunting and camping—are prohibited. Fire crews securing access to Rum Creek FireGRANTS PASS, Ore. – Aviation resources worked steadily throughout the day Sunday, dropping water and retardant to slow the spread of the Rum Creek Fire while ground resources developed safe routes to the Rum Creek Fire perimeter. Firefighter and public safety are always the top priority on a wildfire. Although the Rum Creek Fire started on a ridgetop, the steep topography allows burning debris to potentially roll downhill, spreading fire as it goes, with the possibility of spotting and torching. Additional resources have been ordered and are arriving steadily. Current Situation: Cedar Creek Fire was active within the perimeter Sunday afternoon due to the higher-than-normal temperature and lower relative humidity.  Helicopters were busy most of the day cooling hot spots with water drops as smoke columns could be seen across Waldo Lake and Hills Creek Reservoir. Careful aerial firing within Waldo Lake Wilderness continued in the unburned area between the eastern tip of the fire and the lake in preparation for hand crew operations.  Night crews continued firing operations north on Black Creek Road.  Heavy equipment crews continued improving roads and trails to the south and west of the fire as alternate lines.   Today’s Activities: Today handcrews will assess a safe location to establish a spike camp for firefighters and equipment on the east side of the fire along the western edge of Waldo Lake within the Waldo Lake Wilderness.  Medford, Oregon – As a result of fire activity, the Rainie Falls Trail, located on the south side of theRogue River near Grave Creek, will be closed until further notice. This closure order covers BLM managedpublic lands south of the Rainie Falls Trail. Current Situation: Late yesterday afternoon fire was carefully and deliberately introduced into an unburned area of the Waldo Lake Wilderness, between the lake and the eastern edge of the wildfire. This is being done so firefighters can enter the wilderness and create a fireline to stop the fire from spreading further to the south. In the coming days, firefighters will hike into the wilderness and create an “anchor” point for the line where the fire meets Waldo Lake. They will then engage the fire using Minimum Impact Suppression Tactics (MIST), including setting up pumps and hoses. These tactics also take advantage of natural barriers like lakes and marshy areas to balance suppression objectives with environment impacts. Waldo Lake will not be used as a water source for this operation. Current Situation: Helicopters dropped water Friday to slow the spread of the eastern edge of the fire. Weather conditions also improved which assisted firefighters who are conducting a “burnout” operation above Black Creek Road (FR 2421). The 2421 Road has been prepared as a fireline and once the firefighters bring fire down to the road it will provide an “anchor point” for continuing strategic burning operations to reinforce the line. Night shift crews patrolled the area overnight to ensure the fire stays north of the road. Huckleberry Flats OHV Area will remain open through the weekend but will close on Monday.
