Excellent progress is being made to secure perimeter lines and cool hot spots. Firefighters have also scouted and created miles of direct and indirect line while mopping up areas that threaten the existing containment lines. With the improvement in visibility, all aviation assets assigned to the fire were very active yesterday. A heavy equipment group continues to make progress around the fire assisting with line construction. A weak cold front has brought lower humidity to the region will accelerate the drying of fuels and increase fire activity. Yesterday, crews strengthened the line on the northwest flank of Bonaparte Mountain to Antoine Creek. Crews continued to patrol the remaining areas of the fire line, searching for remaining hot spots and extinguishing them. Today, crews will continue to evaluate the fire movement and behavior along the northwest flank of Bonaparte Mountain and create indirect to direct line, where appropriate. Internal fuels will continue to burn and may periodically produce smoke. Smoke will continue to be visible along the northwest flank of Bonaparte Mountain as fuels are consumed in this area. Repair work continues across the fire, utilizing hand crews, excavators, dozers, chippers and other equipment to repair dozer and hand lines. Bonaparte Lake road is open to the Bonaparte Lake Resort. Smoke Smoke conditions today are expected to be Good to Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups around the forecast area. Moderate fire behavior is predicted today which could see more smoke in the forecast area. The Chelan area closest to the fire may see degraded air quality due to the proximity to the fire. Smoke impacts can be influenced by firing operations as well as activity from other fires in the region. Firefighters are strengthening new containment lines and continue to monitoring existing containment areas. The Rough Patch Fire is 46,092 acres. The Devils Knob Complex is 65,764 acres. Both are 35 - 40% contained. Smoke: With the possibility of more fire activity there follows a chance of increased smoke production today. Air quality throughout the forecast area may be compromised today by increased smoke. Tonight smoke may be trapped closer to the ground by a shallow inversion, but it should lift tomorrow by about 2 PM. Lakeview Ore. – Many areas around the fire today were free of smoke, allowing air resources to support our firefighters on the ground. Helicopter bucket drops helped make substantial progress working hotspots within the fire that could have potentially threatened the fires perimeter. Despite the higher temperatures, fire growth remained minimal today. An increase in winds is anticipated over the next few days and are expected to test the completed dozer and handlines. Today’s focus will be on the eastern and southern edges of the fire. Resources will continue building and reinforcing lines and extinguishing hot spots close to the fire’s edge. The southeast corner has been mopped up 25 feet into the interior. The southwest and northern perimeter of the fire has been prepped for burn out operations, weather and resources permitting, those operations will be conducted in locations where indirect line was previously constructed. Late season wildfire reaches 2,600 acres (Big Meadow Fire Wildfire)
Wildfire season isn’t over yet. On Thursday, September 9, Harney County received abundant late afternoon and evening lightning, and two positive strikes in the Dry Mountain area north of Riley sparked separate wildfires with surprising acreage for this time of year. Quick response from the Silver Creek Rangeland Fire Protection Association, Burns Interagency Fire Zone and private contractors kept the Silver Creek fire at 86 acres before being fully contained on September 11. The Big Meadow fire, burning in heavy timber, with limited ground access due to rocky and rough terrain, is still active at 2,600 acres and only 15 percent contained. Once smoke and weather conditions improved on Friday, September 10, a multitude of air resources were able to fly and provide significant suppression support at Big Meadow.
