9-9-17 Norse Peak Fire Update Date Started: Aug. 11, 2017 Cause: Lightning Total acres: 49,997 Containment: 12% Structures Damaged/Destroyed: 0 Injuries to date: 1 (minor) Total Personnel: 402 Fire Resources: 9 crews, 36 engines, 1 helicopter, 3 bulldozers, 9 water tenders FIRE SUMMARY The California Central Coast Incident Management Team assumed command of the Norse Peak and American fires on Friday, September 8, 2017. Fire activity has moderated under current weather conditions and is not expected to change over several days. Cooler, moist air and northeast winds kept the fire in check with minimal growth seen over the last 24 hours. This current weather pattern will continue to help slow the spread of the fire on the Pierce County side and will allow firefighters to make progress along this western edge. A Community Meeting is scheduled for Monday, September 11 to share information about the Eagle Creek Fire. The meeting will be held at 6 p.m. at the Edgefield Amphitheater at 2126 Halsey Street, Troutdale, Oregon Summary: A break in the weather today marked by moderate temperatures, elevated moisture levels and lighter winds has created the environment for good progress on the Eagle Creek Fire. Firefighters conducted a small burnout between Highway 30 and Homer Mill Road. This is part of the strategy to stop the progress of the fire should a change in the winds threaten the western perimeter of the fire. To the east, firelines along I-84 are being evaluated and improved all the way to Mitchell Point, using bulldozers and specialized heavy machinery including logging equipment. Dates: September 4, 2017 Under the recommendation of the Chetco Bar Fire Incident Commander with concurrence of the Josephine County Sheriff’s Office and the Illinois Valley Fire District, a Level 3 evacuation order has been issued for all residents on Illinois River Road within the US Forest Service Boundaries. This includes the Oak Flat Community. A Level 3 “GO” Evacuation means that you need to LEAVE IMMEDIATELY! Danger to your area is current or imminent, and you should evacuate immediately. If you choose to ignore this advisement, you must understand that emergency services may not be available to assist you further. DO NOT delay leaving to gather any belongings or make efforts to protect your home. Access to evacuated areas may be denied until conditions are safe for citizens to return. The Joe Bar area, located in California near the north edge of the Abney Fire, will remain under an evacuation warning. Containment lines are being created and held with great success throughout the complex. Higher humidity, lower temperatures and moisture reduced fire behavior assisted in securing containment lines on the Creedence, Bigelow and Burnt Peak fires. Ayer, fue el primer dia con tendencias seca y de calientamiento en el are del Incendio de Chetco East Zone (Zona Este) y continuandose hasta el dia Lunes. La precipitacion del dia Jueves redujo la actividad del Incendio dando una Buena oportunidad para que el batallon continuara haciendo progresos en las lineas de contruccion del Incendio. Sin embargo, materiales de combustion solamente fueron humedecidos de una manera temporal, los cuales ya empezaron a secarse. Un cuarto incendio que fue iniciado por relampagos el dia Jueves, fue controlado por los bomberos del Distrito de Wild Ranger. Analistas para el comportamiento de Incendios del Equipo No. 3 del Manejo de Incidentes del Noroeste, observaron que los caminos ya estan secos y los vehiculos ya estan levantando polvo nuevamente. Bomberos realizaron una operación de quema cerca de Cascade Locks para proteger residencias privadas y edificios comerciales que estaban en peligro. Continuaron trabajando en la interestatal 84 y la autopista 30 usando equipo pesado para fortalecer la línea y proteger los edificios, también evitando áreas sensitivos como los criaderos de peces. Helicópteros estaban canalizando agua del rio Columbia para apoyar los bomberos trabajando al sur de la interestatal 84. Helicópteros también proveyeron apoyo a los equipos trabajando para contener el Incendio Archer en Washington. HORSE PRAIRIE FIRE September 9, 2017 9:00 a.m. Riddle, Oregon – Today, Saturday September 9th a change in management of the fire will occur at 12:00 noon when Oregon Department of Forestry’s Incident Management Team 1 assumes control of the fire from ODF IMT 3. A transition of leadership will occur at the same time when Joe Hessel replaces Link Smith as Incident Commander. The reason for the transition is to allow the current team some time for rest and recovery before another possible assignment. Today outgoing Incident Commander Smith commented on the work of the firefighters who stopped the growth of the Horse Prairie Fire during some very challenging weather conditions “very nicely done folks”. FIRE UPDATE: Saturday morning, September 9, 2017 at 10:00 am East Crater Fire (Indian Heaven Wilderness) and Bear Creek Fire (Bear Creek Watershed), Mount Adams Ranger District, Gifford Pinchot National Forest East Crater Fire: Fire activity is relatively quiet this morning due to cloud cover over the fire area. Fire spread continues to be minimal and current fire size remains at 467-acres. Heavy equipment is working to prepare roads and remove trees and brush from roadsides on the east side of wilderness to serve as fireline and minimize fire spread outside the wilderness. The fire has been burning in the Indian Heaven Wilderness since September 3rd.
