Smoke: Smoke production will increase in certain areas of the fire as warm and dry air moves into the region. It should take a couple more days for fuels to completely dry out and smoke to increase. Any visible smoke should disperse well as it moves away from the burning source. As evening arrives smoke production may pool and flow down drainages. Smoke may be noticed, however air quality should not exceed moderate levels overnight.Fire: Fire containment has risen on most fires in the area as firefighters continue to secure and mop up the fire’s edge. Certain interior areas of the fire may continue to slowly burn out and consume the remaining fuels as they dry out. Hotter and drier conditions are expected starting today, and will slowly increase for the next few days.Other: Smoke conditions in the region are expected to remain in the good levels today, however pockets of smoke from various fires may continue to be seen the next few days. Level 1 Evacuation Removed from Union Creek Area INCIDENT: High Cascades Fire Complex (West), Union Creek Evacuation Update DETAILS: Based on current weather and fire behavior, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office and the High Cascades (West) Fire Incident Command Team have determined that the fire danger no longer warrants an imminent threat to the public and all evacuation levels for the residents of the Union Creek area will be removed effective 9/20/17 at 6 pm. The Forest Service forest closure will still be in effect until further notice. The Sheriff’s Office would like to remind the residents of Jackson County, especially those living in the rural parts of the County that we should all be in the Level 1 “Be Ready” mindset. Whether it is a wildfire, flood or winter weather event, we don’t know when an evacuation may be necessary. Tomorrow (Friday, Sept. 22), Northwest Incident Management Team 9 (NW9) turns over management of the Miller Complex fires to a Type 3 command structure, signaling a reduction in the incident’s complexity. Today, the Type 3 team will work with NW 9. The Type 3 team will continue operations at the current incident command post location. Some of the management and support staff from NW9 will continue with the Type 3 team, along with approximately 200 firefighters. Personnel are expected to remain on the complex until a season-ending event, such as sufficient rain/snow, arrives to stop fire activity. High Cascades Complex, West Zone, September 21 UpdateThe rain continued to fall on the Broken Lookout and Pup Fires yesterday. Overall, the Broken Lookout Fire received about 1.8 inches of rain and the Pup Fire, which is slightly higher in elevation, received approximately 2.25 inches. Even though snow levels dropped to as low as 5,300 feet, no snow fell on the fire area. More rain showers are expected today, but rainfall amounts will most likely be less than 1/10th inch. A warming trend is predicted to begin Friday which could bring dry weather for up to ten days. While the change in weather has reduced fire activity in exposed fuels, heat that lies beneath the ground may still hold potential for increased fire activity. With the recent low temperatures and high precipitation amounts, it is possible that fire behavior will remain muted in spite of the drying trend. Update: Yesterday helicopters flew for the first time in several days dropping firefighters off to assess suppression repair work. In addition to retrieving hose lay, firefighters unwrapped a cabin in the Hidden Lakes area. Wrapping is a technique where heat reflective material is used to protect structures potentially in the path of a fire. There was more good work done with suppression repair. One of the areas of work was along the 500 Road. Summary: Keeping crews dry in light of weather conditions was the priority for the High Cascades Complex East Zone yesterday. Rain is expected to decrease dramatically over the next few days, allowing operations to re-engage the fire. Despite the weather, crews were able to complete one mile of road blading on the North Pelican Fire and remove 5,000 feet of hose and water pumps on the Blanket Fire. With the amount of rain and snow on the landscape, operational tactics will begin to focus on suppression rehabilitation efforts. Suppression rehab involves repairing constructed fire line, areas cleared of vegetation to control the fire, to minimize erosion and return the landscape to a more natural looking condition. Often, as with this fire, suppression repair work is done by firefighters even before the fire is contained.
