South Umpqua Complex Daily Update 7-22-18 (South Umpqua Complex Wildfire)
Firefighters are making progress on the Miles Fire in areas that have been threatening private residences, though the Level 2 Evacuation order remains in effect. The fire continues to spread to the north and east beyond the private lands. The Snowshoe Fire continues to be pushed to the southeast. It remains west of the West Fork of Trail Creek as it moves south on private land, and has remained north of Chicago Creek. Oregon Department of Forestry crews, working from the south, and federal interagency crews, working from the north, are striving to tie their respective fire lines together to prevent further spread of the fire. Spotting of up to half a mile has complicated the suppression effort. The Snowshoe Fire will be managed jointly with Oregon Department of Forestry (ODF) under a unified command, with Melvin Thornton as the ODF Incident Commander. Near the Columbus Fire, firefighters are falling hazard trees, opening previous fire lines, and working to protect the...

South Umpqua Complex Daily Update 7-21-18 (South Umpqua Complex Wildfire)
The Umpqua National Forest has issued an Emergency Fire Closure for several trails and roads on the Forest. A list of the closed roads and trails can be seen on the second page of this update or as an electronic attachment. In an effort to strengthen defenses along the upper flank of the Miles Fire, two hotshot crews spent the night burning out fuels between the established line and the approaching fire. Progress was made, but limited by higher night-time relative humidity which kept the fine fuels from carrying the fire. Pumps and hose were installed along the bottom edge of the fire, and a newly arrived large Skycrane helicopter was able to make quick round-trips dropping water on hot spots along the edge of the fire. Overall, however, the wind channeled by the deep canyons pushed the fire further to the southeast. The wind also caused problems on the Snowshoe Fire, which was pushed onto nearby BLM lands. The Cripple Creek Fire has been contained and is in patrol status....
