South Umpqua Complex Daily Update 8-3-18 (South Umpqua Complex Wildfire)
Miles Fire is the most active of the fires in this complex. Winds pushed the Miles and Sugar Pine Fires together in the Hawk Creek Drainage yesterday. The fire spotted over the existing control line near Flat Creek and Ragsdale Butte. Crews will confirm whether or not the original line has been compromised. If so, they will fall back to a more defensible secondary line along the west branch of Elk Creek. On the southern most section to the east, the fire advanced into the evacuation area and spotted across Elk Creek near Burnt Peak. Level 3 evacuations are still in place for residents of the Elk Creek area. As of last night, structures were being lost in the Elk Creek Road area. The number of structures lost or damaged has yet to be determined. Resources from the Sugar Pine incident are also responding to the area and providing structure protection. Prospect, Oregon – The Northwest Incident Management Team #13 was mobilized to control nineteen fires on the High Cascades Ranger District west of Crater Lake National Park under the collective name Sugar Pine, which is also the name of one specific fire. The largest fires Sugar Pine (5,961 acres) and Goodview (1,874 acres) remain uncontrolled. The Miles Fire (over 10,000 acres) is part of the neighboring “South Umpqua Complex”. These fires (Miles, Sugar Pine, Goodview) are interacting and have grown together. Yesterday, smoke cleared in the late afternoon, resulting in lower humidity and an increase in fire activity. At approximately 4:30 p.m. the Miles Fire again surged towards Elk Creek Road. At approximately 5:30, it spotted across Elk Creek Road onto Burnt Peak. Helicopters and firefighters attempted to suppress the spot fire which quickly grew to 200 acres. At around 6:30, one residence on Elk Creek Road burned. Due to increased fire behavior on the Miles Fire, the Jackson County Sheriff's Office is expanding the Sugar Pine/Miles evacuation area toward Prospect. The Level 3 "Go" now includes all addresses on Sugar Pine Road, Dodes Creek Road, and Shelly Lane, plus portions of Elk Creek Road, Uprich Road, and Lewis Road. South Valley Fire Evening Update for 8/2/18 (South Valley Fire Wildfire)
Dufur, OR – A transfer of command from the local ODF Central Oregon District to the unified command of Oregon Department Forestry’s Team 2 (IC Cline) and Oregon State Fire Marshal Green Team (IC Hallman) occurred at 6:00 p.m. tonight. The control lines that were put in yesterday held along the northern edge of the fire. Burnout operations north of Tygh Ridge Rd. yesterday helped keep the fire in check. Today crews worked to hold those lines which were reinforced with retardant drops. This afternoon’s large smoke plume occurred in the Larch Creek and Pine Creek drainages. The fire ran uphill into the wheat fields in the Friend Rd. area. Crews will focus their efforts in this area tonight. Three OSFM Structure Task Forces will be in the Friend and Winslow Rd. areas patrolling and monitoring where the fire is in relation to homes. An infra-red flight will be flown tonight to accurately map the fire perimeter. The weather is expected to moderate slightly over the next few days...

Update from the Bureau of Land Management, regarding the impacts of the South Valley Fire on the Deschutes River:Yesterday evening the Wasco County Sheriff, in conjunction with local communities and the Prineville BLM, made the decision to temporarily close the Lower Deschutes River Access Road from Maupin City Park to Sherars Bridge. All campers and recreationists in the immediate area were informed of the closure and threat of fire. If crews had not been able to get forward progress of the South Valley Fire stopped, the fire could have reached the river canyon and created the same safety hazards and dangerous situations that we experienced during the Substation and Long Hollow fires when fire crossed the river. Garner Complex Community Meeting—Thursday, August 2 – 6:00 p.m. Evans Valley Education & Community Center 8205 East Evans Creek Road, Rogue River Jackson County Sheriff’s Office has lowered the Level 2 (Get Set) to Level 1 (Be Ready) as of 8:00 a.m. this morning. Previous Level 1 evacuations remain in place. Due to ongoing fire operations throughout the area, the public is reminded to avoid fire areas and travel cautiously. Containment on the Garner Complex has climbed to 70%. Firefighting operations have begun winding down, and crews continue mop up activities. Wishram, WA, - Steady progress continues to be made by the fire crews. The footprint has not changed appreciably since yesterday’s update. The entire fire perimeter is either a bulldozer dug line, existing roadways, and/or a combination of wet-line and hand-dug crew lines. Our mop up standard for the perimeter is 50 feet of black and around residences it is 100 feet.Last evening around 5:30, the fire crossed our control line and made an uphill run to the northeast. Helicopter water dumps helped crews to contain the breakout.Night crews were used the past two nights and will continue tonight. Last night hot spots were found and put out. The temperatures will be cooler, in the mid 80s, with higher relative humidities.The fire is still warm in the interior. These hot spots will be of concern today with the forecasted winds.
