Additionally, crews are removing hazard trees and addressing erosion in recreation areas. The Burned Area Emergency Response team (BAER) has concluded their work. BAER teams are typically dispatched to large fires after a halt in growth, but before suppression is completed to assess the habitats and landscape. General Information:  Yesterday the Type 3 Fire Management Team managing the Riverside fire also took command of the Mount Hood portion of the Lionshead Fire. Personnel on both incidents will continue suppression repair efforts for the protection of watersheds and fisheries, as well as with hazard mitigation efforts so Forest roads can be opened as quickly and safely as possible. The old Highway 138 was a rough old road and it took a toll on the vehicles of the 1930s and 1940s. On October 5th, archaeologists Chris Kelly and Amber Nelson discovered the final resting place for some of those cars.  According to Nelson, one of the two archaeologists to discover this site, "We now have [Highway] 138, that runs through the Umpqua up to Diamond Lake. But previously, the old [Highway] 138 would come up on the hills where some of these trails are now at...these old cars, it seems that they broke down out there, and someone just tied a winch to them and pulled them off the road. It's sort of a "car graveyard" out there, if you will."Before the bridges were built, locals would have to take a ferry, like the one pictured above, to make their way across the North Umpqua River.  A long evolution, very likely originating from a Native American trail, led to the development of the old Highway 138. Lionshead Fire Update Friday, Oct. 16     REDMOND, Ore. –   Cooperating weather has allowed fire crews to complete suppression repair work this week. Crews have worked with local agencies to complete road repair projects, hazard tree and rock fall removal, and to begin setting up a long-term repair plan. Fire managers will implement a plan to minimize the amount of damage to the landscape after the fire while ensuring public safety.   Fire crews and support personnel have been released to support other incidents, notably the ongoing large fires in California. Aerial resources have been reduced to best support the footprint of the fire. PENDLETON, Ore. - Fire management officials on the Umatilla National Forest are preparing to implement the forest’s fall prescribed burn plan, which could impact camping and hunting opportunities in several hunting units across the forest.  Any associated road and trail closures will go into effect prior to and during burn operations, which typically take 2-5 days to complete. Hunters are advised to plan ahead and avoid camping in the designated prescribed burn areas during the 2020 hunting season. Frequent, low-intensity fire is essential for healthy forests and reducing the risk of uncharacteristic wildfire caused by excessive fuel buildup. Prescribed burning is an effective tool for removing excessive amounts of brush, shrubs, and trees, while also encouraging the growth of native vegetation.
