Chickadee and Walker Fire Daily Update 8.19.2021 (Chickadee Creek Wildfire)
With the lower wind speeds and improved overnight relative humidity, crews were able to make progress on both fires. Acreage on the Chickadee Fire was recently updated after inclement weather prevented infrared aircraft flights for multiple days. Walker Creek Fire: Firefighters were able to secure the 050 road to Bonaparte Lake Road, as well as tying into other existing roads, fortifying the northern edge of the fire. Activity by Squattersville kept firefighters and engines engaged yesterday. Crews were able to establish control line from Bonaparte Road to the 3230 Road. Aerial operations continued their bucket drops, making progress south of the 3230 road. Structure protection continues to be a top priority along with patrolling and scouting potential line improvements. On the north/northeast portion of the fire, crews will focus on prepping roads and putting in direct line. Cooling of hotspots around structures in that area is underway. Bulldozers have been working this area and will construct this line around Funk Mountain until terrain changes near the 38 Road. Smoke DiscussionA north to northwest flow combined with warming and drying will bring increasing periods of smoke to the forecast area for the next couple of days. West of the Cascades Good air quality is on tap for today with periods of higher density smoke from mid-morning into the afternoon. Eugene will have Good air quality today but some haze may be observed. Communities around Oakridge and Cascara/Lowell can expect overall Moderate air quality conditions becoming Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups (USG) and Unhealthy between 10 am and 3 pm but improving into the evening hours. East of the Cascades, from Bend to La Pine, USG and Moderate concentrations will be observed this morning. Smokier conditions are likely by midday, with some periods of Unhealthy around lunch time possible and returning to Moderate in the evening

Bulldog & Mack Mountain Fire Update 8-19-21 (Bulldog Mountain Wildfire)
Bulldog Mountain Fire: Yesterday mild weather over the fire helped crews make good progress. Firefighters continued working on the NE corner of the fire and were able to construct another indirect fire line to keep the fire away from private land and residents on the Hodgson-Lakin Rd. Crews were also successful in scouting and constructing additional indirect line to the west of the fire. Contingency line construction continued in the Davis Lake and Deadman Creek areas. Today firefighters will strengthen indirect containment lines on northeast and west flanks of the fire. Firefighters will patrol and perform direct fire attack on FS Road 6110 where appropriate. Heavy equipment will be active again in Davis Lake and Deadman Creek. Aircraft will be requested to assist if needed. Fox Complex Fire Evening Update - Wednesday, August 18th, 2021 (Fox Complex Wildfire)
Lakeview, OR – Crews continue to make progress on the Fox Complex fires. This evening crews started a small burnout operation along the northern line of the Patton Meadow Fire beginning the process of “black lining” in the steep, rocky terrain. They will continue burnout operations along the northern perimeter as weather conditions allow.While a small spot fire was discovered and extinguished on the south end of the fire south of Highway 140, the southern edge continues to improve with mop-up operations hitting 50 feet into the fire’s interior. The spot fire had been smoldering beneath the surface for a few days and flared up due to increased wind in the area. Crews were able to catch the fire without difficulty.Crews on the west edge, along Patton Meadow Lane, have also reached a depth of 50 feet with mop-up activities. Understanding Soil Burn Severity (Bootleg Fire Wildfire)
We tend to think of wildfire burn severity in terms of the visual impacts to above-ground vegetation, but the post-fire landscape response (erosion, flooding, and mass movement) is generally more strongly correlated to soil burn severity. When characterizing soil burn severity, looking at the vegetation is a good starting place to understand the conditions on the ground. Armed with that information, the BAER team’s watershed specialists (soil scientists, hydrologists, and geologists) ground-truth different vegetation burn intensities to tease out patterns of how fire affected and changed the properties of the soil. Pre-fire ground cover, forest type, fire behavior, slope, aspect, and other factors all influence soil burn severity. After field observations are collected, specialists adjust the vegetation severity map to create the soil burn severity (SBS) map.
