Bull Complex Update for Sunday, September 19, 2021 (Bull Complex Wildfire)

Inciweb Articles OR - September 19, 2021 - 3:11pm
RIPPLEBROOK, Ore. Firefighters took advantage of the rain and cooler temperatures yesterday to patrol and monitor for hot spots near the fire line. Additionally, firefighters removed vegetation near the fire perimeter to reduce the chance of fire spread. Today, firefighters continue to establish containment line on the northwest side of the Bull Complex. This plan will allow the fire to stay in a smaller footprint. Following yesterday’s heavy rain, firefighters are assessing the fire today to see where it is most active in order to make the most strategic and effective plan over the next few days. Additionally, firefighters are mitigating erosion from the rain by cleaning ditch lines. Heavy equipment will repair washed out roads and help maintain culverts on forest roads. Travel may be difficult in the coming days as heavy rains impact forest infrastructure.  Weather: Over one inch of rain fell over the Bull Complex yesterday. An additional inch of rain is in the forecast for...

Big Meadow Fire Update for September 19, 2021 (Big Meadow Fire Wildfire)

Inciweb Articles OR - September 19, 2021 - 10:14am
Burns, OR – Northwest Incident Management Team 7 will transfer command of the Big Meadow Fire to a Type 4 organization managed by Incident Commander Darren Gunn today at 7:00 p.m. Cooperation between local agencies will continue towards reaching full containment of the fire. This will be Team 7’s last update. All future updates will be provided on the Burns Interagency Fire Zone Facebook page.     Yesterday, firefighters continued work on gridding and mop up. On the eastern flank near Egypt Canyon, firefighters will continue work on mop up and backhauling hose...

Cougar Peak Fire Update September 19, 2021 (Cougar Peak Fire Wildfire)

Inciweb Articles OR - September 19, 2021 - 9:39am
Cougar Peak Fire Update Northwest Incident Management Team 8, Incident Commander Kevin Stock September 19, 2021   Lakeview Ore. – The weather event predicted for the past several days moved over the fire yesterday. Up to one-third of an inch of rain fell on the fire, dampening exposed fuels and reducing fire intensity. However, it was not enough moisture to keep the fire from continuing to burn. In the afternoon, the southwest corner of the fire had a spot fire that firefighters stopped at one-tenth of an acre. Large drought-stricken trees and fuels under thick canopies continued to feed the fires through the afternoon.   As the rain subsided in the afternoon, crews were cautious of working in the heavily timbered areas, as fire and drought weakened trees fell across the fire lines and roadways.   Mop-up on the eastern side of the fire continued all day. Crews continued progress on containment line work. From the south end up the east side of the fire around to the north end,...

Smoke Outlook for Saturday, Sept 19 (Middle Fork Complex Wildfire)

Inciweb Articles OR - September 19, 2021 - 7:57am
Fire and WeatherExpect scattered rain showers continuing through today, tapering off by Sunday evening. A warming/drying trend begins Monday, but another cold front Is expected to move in by Wednesday/Thursday. Not much precipitation expected with the next system. Fire behavior will be limited to isolated pockets of heat and heavy fuels smoldering with no movement or perimeter growth expected today.SmokeAlthough fire activity will be minimal, heavy, critically dry fuels will continue to smolder and consume, and smoke will continue to be generated. To what degree air quality is impacted will depend on location where smoke is generated, how much smoke is generated, and where wind takes it. Widely scattered small pockets of heavy fuels smoldering shouldn’t result in large amounts of smoke accumulation as would be expected if a few fairly large pockets of heavy fuels were to be smoldering in one drainage. For today and tomorrow, smoke shouldn’t be much of an issue, but that will...

Twentyfive Mile BAER Soil Burn Severity Mapping Process (TwentyFive Mile BAER Burned Area Emergency Response)

InciWeb Articles WA - September 19, 2021 - 7:20am
One of the first tasks a Burned Area Emergency Response (BAER) team undertakes is a soil burn severity map. Typically, BAER Teams use satellite imagery comparisons of pre- and post-fire vegetation condition to develop preliminary estimates of soil burn severity and identify areas of interest (see https://fsapps.nwcg.gov/baer/). Using information collected in the burned area, this preliminary estimate is refined into a finalized soil burn severity map. For the Twentyfive Mile Fire, however, persistent cloud and smoke cover and timing of satellite orbits made obtaining clear imagery of the burned area impossible. Instead of starting from satellite-derived estimates of severity, the BAER Team will rely solely on ground-based observations. They will collect information on ground cover, canopy consumption, intact roots, and water repellency to inform soil burn severity mapping. While the precision provided by the satellite process will not be present in this product, the manually derived...
