 Special StatementThis is the last Daily Smoke Outlook for the Middle Fork Complex. Air quality information may be found at the following website: https://fire.airnow.gov/Fire and WeatherToday, winds will shift to an onshore flow, allowing for slightly better afternoon relative humidity between 25% and 35%. Temperatures will still be warm but not as warm as yesterday with highs between 75 and 85 degrees. Winds will be on the increase with the approach of a cold front still 2 to 3 days out. Expect west winds throughout the day with some gusts up to 15 mph. Sunday will be cooler with much better relative humidity as cloud cover will be on the increase. A slight chance of rain will be present as well with the approach of the cold front. Monday and Tuesday will be days with a 90% to 100% chance of substantial rainfall. At this time, between 1.00 – 1.50 inches of rainfall is expected. Evacuation Levels Decreased on Cougar Peak Fire (Cougar Peak Fire Wildfire)

EVACUATION LEVELS DECREASED TODAYDue to increased containment and reduced fire behavior, evacuation levels have been decreased on the Cougar Peak Fire. Areas that were previously in a level 3 evacuation have been reduced to level 2, and areas previously in a level 2 evacuation have been reduced to a level 1. On this map, please note the reddish area shown in the center is the fire perimeter, not a level 3 evacuation. DNR Surplus Engine Program

Applications are now open for fire districts 

2021 Calendar

October 1 – Application process opens for districts to apply for surplus engines.

October 31 – Application window closes and selections are made.

November 15 – DNR will begin to notify districts of the results.

DNR will surplus 10 fire engines as well as four fire decks to eligible Washington Fire Districts this year. RCW 76.04.135(4) authorizes DNR to transfer ownership of surplus DNR engines to Fire Districts in wildfire prone areas. These Districts need to have a median income level below the state average. Interested Districts can submit a request for an engine by completing the “Surplus Engine Request Form.” Requests must be received by DNR no later than October 31, 2021.

Districts can view the engines in person October 1 through the 29 (Mon-Fri) at the DNR Compound located at 801 88th Avenue SE, Tumwater, WA. To schedule a viewing of engines, please contact Nick Cronquist DNR Fire District Assistance at 360-480-2700. 

DNR will consider the following when prioritizing applications for engines:

  • Wildfire Prone Area
  • Mutual aid response agreements with DNR
  • Volunteer firefighter membership           
  • District Budget
  • Average Annual Wildfire Responses
  • Districts that have not received an engine in the last 3 years are first priority. *Decks are excluded*
  • Additional criteria may also be utilized

Requests must be received no later than October 31, 2021 and DNR will begin to notify districts of the results as soon as November 15, 2021.

NOTE: All surplus fire engines are offered “AS IS.” DNR makes no warranty of condition or operability. Fire districts are encouraged to complete their own due diligence to determine vehicle condition and operability, including tanks, pumps, and other vehicle accessories during the application window.

 Yesterday and Overnight: Warmer drier weather helped ensure successful burning operations to strengthen containment lines. Crews along Bumping River Road continued to improve structure protection as well as test sprinkler set ups. Air resources were used to assist with fire activity along Bumping River Road and Old River Road. Monitoring of structures in and around the Cliffdell area is ongoing. Along the rest of the perimeter of the fire (along Highway 410 south of Cliffdell to the junction of US 12 and from the junction of US 12 westward), fire personnel continued to back haul equipment no longer in use. Hazard tree mitigation continued along Old River Road and crews continued mopping up previous burnouts along the FR 1706. Today: A slight increase in temperature is forecast with light southeasterly winds. Green Ridge Fire Statistics: Size: 43,735 acres, Containment: 61%, Total Personnel: 64, Location: 30 miles east of Walla Walla, Reported: July 7, 2021, Cause: Lightning. Current Situation: Yesterday the fire continued to have minimal fire behavior, with a few interior smokes observed on the southwest corner of the fire near Godman Guard Station. Firefighters continued to patrol and mop up all containment lines. Where containment lines are secured, firefighters also completed suppression repair (such as constructing water bars to help reduce erosion potential and mastication to improve roadways used for containment lines) based on identified rehabilitation needs. Crews also continued backhauling (returning) equipment that is no longer needed for suppression operations. COUGAR PEAK FIRE UPDATE - September 24, 2021 NORTHWEST INCIDENT MANAGEMENT TEAM 12 Incident Commanders: Jeff Dimke and Bobby Shindelar The Cougar Peak Fire is currently burning approximately 15 miles northwest of Lakeview, Oregon. The Incident Command Post at the Lakeview Fairgrounds is closed to all but essential personnel to help ensure the health and safety of community members and firefighters.  Weather Today will be the warmest and driest day of the week with temperatures into the low 80s. Temperatures will cool over the weekend, with temperatures further dropping early next week.  Operations Yesterday, crews continued to install hose lays on the north side of Cougar Peak. With light winds, fire activity within containment lines around Cougar Peak was much quieter than in previous days. RIPPLEBROOK, Ore. – Heat remains within the fire perimeter with smouldering and light smoke.  Moisture levels in live and deal fuels will continue to decrease in the next few days with the forecasted drying trend. The south flank of the fire had minimal activity yesterday, yet smoke was visible from the surrounding area.  The fire did not advance beyond its current footprint as crews were able to directly engage the fire utilizing helicopter support.  Patrolling, mop-up and suppression repair will continue over the next operational shifts.Ripplebrook campground’s hazard trees have been removed to provide safe areas for firefighters.  Tree falling modules assigned to Rainbow Campground will continue to remove fuels, in conjunction with heavy equipment such as skidder, excavator and chipper. Fire and WeatherToday will see warmer temperatures and lower humidity across the fire area. Temperatures will warm into the 80’s, near 90 in some locations. E/SE winds will be fairly light. Saturday and Sunday will see increasing cloud cover and lower temperatures. Monday, a fall-like system will approach with another system later in the week that may be a season-ender. Fire activity is still in the creeping/smoldering stage, but may see more active fire in isolated areas by this afternoon. Expect more surface fire where wind and slope align on aspects that have been exposed to sunlight. There is potential for occasional single tree torching.SmokeFires across the State continue to be quiet this week.  John Day, Hines and Prairie City, OR. — (September 23, 2021) Malheur National Forest Fire staff opened all boundary area roads on the Black Butte Fire Closure Area.
