Holiday Farm Fire Update 9/29 (Holiday Farm Fire Wildfire)
Springfield, Ore. – Oregon Department of Forestry’s Type 1 Incident Management Team 3, Incident Commander Link Smith, will hand the fire over to ODF IMT 1, another Type 1 team, tomorrow morning. The team would like to thank the communities in the area for their kind hospitality and support during our stay. The size of the fire stands at 173,094 acres and is now 60 percent contained. 650 personnel are currently working the on the fire that includes 17 hand crews, 44 engines, 7 bulldozers, 7 water tenders and 3 other types of heavy equipment. Just six minor injuries have occurred on the fire since it started the night of September 7th. Fire crews continue to tie containment lines together in tough-to-get-to areas while being supported in the air by four assigned helicopters. Sunday’s higher temperatures and breezy winds stirred up fire activity in some unburned islands around Doe Creek. The interior fire activity posed no threat to containment lines. Today’s weather will...
Lionshead Fire Update Tuesday September 29, 2020 (Lionshead Fire Wildfire)
Lionshead Fire update for Tuesday, Sept. 29 REDMOND, Ore. – Although the containment percentage has not changed for several days, crews are working hard at mop-up, cold trailing and connecting segments of contained line around the southwest, west and northwest perimeter. “We got a lot of good work done today and we’re seeing great progress,” John Spencer, operations chief trainee, reported Monday. “We should be moving a lot of area to patrol status in the next two or three days.” Mop-up is extinguishing or removing burning material along or near a control line, felling snags, or moving logs so they won't roll downhill. Cold trailing is when firefighters feel the edge of a burning area with the hand and dig out or trench around burning spots. Today, a roads group will begin removing hazard trees along the 46 corridor between Detroit and Breitenbush. Fire managers are still developing a hazard removal strategy for Hwy. 22 to ensure safe public access. On the...

Thielsen Fire Soil Burn Severity Data Finalized (Western Oregon USFS BAER Burned Area Emergency Response)
THIELSEN FIRE SOIL BURN SEVERITY MAP RELEASED Burned Area Emergency Response (BAER) specialists from the U.S. Forest Service have finalized the Soil Burn Severity (SBS) map for the 9,921-acre Thielsen Fire. Soil burn severity is classified into 4 levels: unburned, low, moderate and high. Due to the constraints caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and widespread fire activity in the area, specialists spent little time in the field and instead focused their analysis on an interpretation of satellite imagery and ground photos collected during fire suppression activities. Additional analysis on this fire can be done at a future date once fire activity drops and the specialists are more easily allowed into the burned area. The analysis showed the following distribution of severity: High: 542 acres (5%) | Moderate: 4,295 (43%) | Low: 4,171 (42%) | Unburned: 914 (9%) BAER post-fire assessment teams use the SBS data to identify if there are areas of concern where increased soil erosion,...
Lionshead Fire Update Monday September 28, 2020 (Lionshead Fire Wildfire)
Lionshead Fire update for Monday, Sept. 28 REDMOND, Ore. – Fire crews are completing more containment line each day and looking for ways to attack the fire more directly where conditions allow. Pacific Northwest Team 13 under Incident Commander Brian Gales has assumed management of the fire. Structural protection crews have shifted to patrol and chipping operations in Detroit and Idanha, as well as gathering the miles of hose used during the suppression effort. Today, wind speeds of 20-25 miles per hour are expected, with gusts of 30 to 35. This will increase fire activity, primarily consuming fuels in the interior, particularly in open areas. Crews are strategically positioned to address flareups and spot fires. Fire managers are developing hazard tree removal plans for Hwy. 22 to ensure safe public access, and for the 46 corridor to provide crews safe entry for mopup. On the southwest corner of the fire, crews have removed hazard trees in the Stahlman Cabin area. ...

9/28 Riverside Fire Daily Update (Riverside Fire Wildfire)
Weather and Fire Behavior: Sunny, clear, dry and breezy conditions are expected today with sustained winds across the fire to continue over the next 24 hours. Potential for 40-45 mile per hour gusts along east-west orientated drainages and Goat Mountain are forecast. Creeping and smoldering fire activity is expected. A creeping fire exhibits slow rates of spread and low flames. Significant growth of the fire is not anticipated due to lingering effects of the moisture we received over the past week. Open areas of fine fuels, such as grass and leaves, will dry faster and carry fire more readily. Elevations above 2000’ will dry more quickly due to lower humidity levels. East winds will bring more smoke to the area and isolated smokes from vegetation burning within the fire perimeter will be visible. Yesterday: Firefighters continued to patrol the fire perimeter, improved fire lines and responded to smoldering fire activity that produced visible smoke near...

Holiday Farm Fire Update 9/27 (Holiday Farm Fire Wildfire)
Springfield, Ore. – With containment reaching 50 percent, firefighters on the Holiday Farm Fire are once again preparing for another change in the weather. After days of wetting rain and cool temperatures, warm and dry east winds will enter the area later today pushing temperatures into the mid 80’s through Wednesday. Fire managers are cautiously optimistic that work accomplished so far will result in similar results from the last time these conditions tested control lines just four days ago. That east wind event fanned flames and stirred up embers deep inside the fire’s interior, but did not create any problems outside established containment lines. The incident management team and local fire agencies are receiving several inquiries regarding small columns of smoke coming out of the Holiday Farm Fire that appear to be outside containment lines. Please be assured that these “smokes” are well within the perimeter of the fire and pose minimal threat to crossing containment...
Holiday Farm Fire Update 9/28 (Holiday Farm Fire Wildfire)
Springfield, Ore. – Firefighters on the Holiday Farm Fire welcomed another favorable day of weather Sunday. Calm winds and blue skies produced perfect working conditions that helped bump containment to 55 percent. The fire has not spread from its current footprint of 173,094 acres in seven days. The area will continue to turn from warm to hot over the next few days with an east wind component that is expected to stir fire behavior inside the interior of the fire. Residents and passersby can expect to see small columns of smoke within the fire’s interior over the next few days. These “smokes” pose minimal threat to crossing containment lines or threatening homes. Fire personnel are encouraging the public to not report these smokes to emergency services as they overload the system and create unnecessary response. Hazard tree and debris removal will continue along Highway 126, but local motor vehicle traffic will be allowed through with a pilot car along a 10-mile stretch...
Smoke Information - Did You See Smoke Today (Inchelium Complex Wildfire)
Did you see smoke on the Inchelium Complex Fires today? Fuels continue to burn within the perimeter of the fires (Inchelium Highway, Fry, and Kewa Fields) and are unlikely to spread beyond the containment line. Fire crews will continue to monitor the line to ensure containment. How long will smoke appear on Inchelium Complex Fires? Smoke will continue for several weeks or more. Internal fuels, such as logs and stumps will take some time to burn and completely consume. What is causing the smoke? Partially and unburned fuels exist within the fire perimeter and these will continue to smolder and be consumed through a slow burn. In fire terms, areas of the Inchelium Complex Fires had a dirty burn: an area where there is still a lot of standing, half-burned fuel susceptible to reburning. When should I report smoke and to who? Please understand that smoke from far interior burning is generally not a concern. If you see, however, some active burning closer to the fire’s edge, around...
