Tuesday, fire crews battling the Bridge Creek Fire burning on the Colville Indian Reservation successfully established a black line around a valuable seedling test and research site on the eastern flank of the fire and continued to develop black line around the northeastern flank. Additional crews continued to finish contingency lines along the western flank of the fire and have prepared the western line for potential burnout operations. Today, crews will monitor passage of a cold front that is expected to bring shifty and gusty winds. Southwest winds will continue into the evening and overnight. The Washington State Department of Transportation and Norse Peak Fire managers are implementing a plan for allowing limited traffic through the Highway 410 corridor between Chinook Pass (mile post 69) and Hells Crossing (mile post 84, west of Cliffdell, WA). Beginning Tuesday night August 22 at 8:00 p.m., Highway 410 will be opened to traffic until 6:00 a.m. Provided conditions remain acceptable, the road will be opened nightly for these same hours, until further notice. During those hours, night shift fire engines will patrol the fire and closure areas. The Highway remains closed during the day from 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. this week, to allow fire crews to work safely along the highway. This plan remains in effect through Friday August 25. A 10-acre spot fire occurred to the east of Summit Trail on Sunday night. Helicopters and Fire Boss scooper planes converged on the spot fire on Monday, and crews successfully surrounded it with a combination of hand line and dozer line. There is also a backup contingency line to the east and Bridge Creek Road as a back-up fire break to the south. Bridge Creek Road was closed for two hours on Monday because work on the Summit Trail spot fire had the potential of interfering with traffic. The southern flank of the Bridge Creek Fire has been lined and the line has been reinforced by a burnout operation. The eastern flank has now been lined and burned out. Today’s plans include mopping up the spot fire, finishing a “black line” (a result of a burnout operation) around a special seedling test and research site within the fire area, and continuing the burnout operation along the north side of the fire. Fire activity is increasing on Jolly Mountain Fire. As temperatures increased and relative humidity decreased and the wind picked up this afternoon, the fire is making short uphill runs above the West Fork Teanaway River. Expect to see increased smoke from the local communities.

On Sunday firefighters achieved their goal of burning out 4.5 miles of forest fuels along the Summit Trail fire line all the way down to Bridge Creek Road. One spot fire outside the line has kept firefighters busy through the night and into the morning. Three helicopters and five “Fire Boss” water scooping airplanes on loan from Omak and Deer Park were supporting the burnout operation. In addition to work on the Bridge Creek Fire, firefighters and a helicopter also responded to a fire 20 miles to the southeast north of Wilmont Bay and near Roger’s Bar Campground on Sunday evening. Initial attack remains a top priority for the team. Sunday afternoon the Type 2 helicopter that made a precautionary landing on Saturday near Summit Road was repaired and put back into service.
