September 15, 2018 Update for Klondike Fire (Klondike Fire Wildfire)

September 15, 2018 - 8:47am
Overview Klondike Fire West Zone During this morning’s briefing, Deputy Incident Commander Charlie Patterson summed it up as, "For several days we’ve been working to button up the west side of the fire closest to Agness, and yesterday was a great day." Aerial ignition helped firefighters blacken unburned pockets and reinforce control lines within the upper reaches of Fish Hook Creek and off Forest Road 150 above Indigo Creek. With forecast winds today from the southwest, the expectation is for the fire to burn into itself to consume remaining fuels and greatly reduce the threat in that area. A cold front moving through Southwest Oregon is bringing higher winds and drier air to the fire. Lower humidity and higher winds will increase fire behavior on the highest ridge tops today. Southwest winds will result in increased fire spread in the Silver Creek drainage. Today’s plan is to mop up and hold all sides of the fire. Overall, equipment, aircraft, and personnel are being...

September 12, 2018 - 5:52pm
Malheur National Forest fire officials are monitoring conditions on the Forest and preparing to implement the fall prescribed fire program. Prescribed fires, also known as controlled burns, refer to the planned and controlled use of fire by a team of highly skilled fire managers under specific conditions. During the fall months, the Forest has a number of planning units, ranging in size from 150 acres up to 4000 acres, scheduled for prescribed fire operations. Prescribed fires are conducted within specific parameters including temperature, relative humidity, fuel moisture, and wind speed. Implementation is dependent upon these and other necessary conditions. Should conditions allow, crews may start operations on some smaller units as early as Friday, September 14, 2018. Fall burning will build upon efforts in the spring and early summer of 2018 when the Forest safely and successfully accomplished prescribed fire operations on approximately 4,500 acres.
